There are 3rd party python packages that can read and write .pdfs.
Google 'Python pdf library' or just go to
http://pypi.python.org/pypi?%3Aaction=search&term=pdf&submit=search
Make sure you check out the one from ReportLab.
I suspect at least one will do what you want.
