Yes. You can find that out without resorting to the C API:

>>> class A(dict): pass
... 
>>> type(A)
<type 'type'>

A fancy example:

>>> import abc
>>> class B:
...     __metaclass__ = abc.ABCMeta
... 
>>> type(B)
<class 'abc.ABCMeta'>
