When you're using .split() with no argument (split on any whitespace),
you don't need to use .strip() with no argument (strip any whitespace):

 >>> ' foo  bar  '.strip().split()
['foo', 'bar']
 >>> ' foo  bar  '.split()
['foo', 'bar']
