  And it doesn't take much of a reality check
  through my own personal faculties to realize 
  that my newsreader is not currently piped
  into a text-to-speech process and is not
  emitting any sound .... :-)

  Even then, there most likely wouldn't be

  I don't think programming languages of that era
  were poorly designed and especially not just because
  they happened to be coded in text with all caps ....
