The deep philosophical questions around the year 1900 in both
mathematics and physics were left embarrassingly open. The way out was
to stop caring.
Mathematics gave up on defining numbers and settled with a standard
chain of beads:
0 = {}
1 = { 0 }
2 = { 0, 1 }
3 = { 0, 1, 2 }
