Oxycodone is in a group of drugs called narcotic pain relievers. It is
similar to morphine.
Oxycodone is used to treat moderate to severe pain. The extended-
release form of this medication is for around-the-clock treatment of
pain. It is not for treating pain just after a surgery unless you were
already taking oxycodone before the surgery.
Oxycodone may also be used for purposes other than those listed in

Since oxycodone is sometimes used as needed, you may not be on a
dosing schedule. If you are using the medication regularly, take the
missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next
dose, skip the missed dose and wait until your next regularly
scheduled dose. Do not use extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Extended-release oxycodone is not for use on an as-needed basis for
pain.

of this medicine. An overdose of oxycodone can be fatal.

It is also similar to hydrocodone, differing only in that it has a
hydroxyl group at carbon-14.

Expanded expression for the compound oxycodone in the academic
literature include "dihydrohydroxycodeinone", "Eucodal", "Eukodal",
"14-hydroxydihydrocodeinone", and "Nucodan". In a UNESCO convention,
the translations of "oxycodone" are oxycodon (Dutch), oxycodone
(French), oxicodona (Spanish), ???????????? (Arabic), ??? (Chinese),
and оксикодон (Russian). The word "oxycodone" should not be confused
with "oxandrolone", "oxazepam", "oxybutynin", "oxytocin", or

A group of Australian researchers has proposed (based on a 1997 study
in rats) that oxycodone, unlike morphine (the effect of which is
mediated by ?-opioid receptors), acts on ?-opioid receptors. Further
research by this group indicates the drug appears to be a ?2b-opioid
agonist. However, this has been disputed, primarily on the basis that
oxycodone produces effects typical of ?-opioid agonists.

Research by a Japanese group suggests that the effect of oxycodone is
mediated by different receptors in different situations. Specifically,
in diabetic mice the ?-opioid receptor appears to be involved in the
antinociceptive effects of oxycodone, while in non-diabetic mice the ?
1-opioid receptor seems to be primarily responsible for these

Oxycodone is metabolized to ? and ? oxycodol; oxymorphone, then ?
and ? oxymorphol and noroxymorphone; and noroxycodone, then ? and ?

These metabolites are true only for humans. As many as six metabolites
for oxycodone (14-hydroxydihydromorphinone, 14-hydroxydihydrocodeine,
14-hydroxydihydrocodeinone N-oxide {oxycodone N-oxide}, 14-
hydroxydihydroisocodeine, 14-hydroxydihydrocodeine N-oxide, and
noroxycodone) have been found in rabbits, several of which are thought
to be active metabolites to some extent, although a study using
conventional oral oxycodone concluded that oxycodone itself, and not
its metabolites, is predominantly responsible for the drug's opioid
effects on the brain.

Unlike morphine and hydromorphone, oxycodone is metabolized by the
cytochrome P450 enzyme system in the liver, making it vulnerable to
drug interactions. Some people are fast metabolizers resulting in
reduced analgesic effect but increased adverse effects, while others
are slow metabolisers resulting in increased toxicity without improved
analgesia. The dose of OxyContin must be reduced in patients with

PRESCRIPTION: Yes

PREPARATIONS: Tablets: 5, 10, 15, 20, and 30 mg. Controlled release
tablets: 10, 15, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, and 160 mg.

STORAGE: Oxycodone should be stored between 15 to 30 C (59 to 86 F).
Open bottles of oral solution should  be destroyed after 90 days.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Oxycodone is prescribed for the relief of moderate to
severe pain.

DOSING: The usual starting dose using immediate release oxycodone
tablets is 5 to 30 mg every 4 hours. Patients who have never received
opioids should start with 5-15 mg every 4 to 6 hours. Some patients
may require 30 mg or more every 4 hours.

The usual starting dose using controlled release tablets is 10 mg
every 12 hours. Controlled release tablets are used when around the
clock treatment is required for an extended period of time. Controlled
release tablets should not be broken, crushed or chewed but should be
swallowed whole. Broken, crushed or chewed controlled release tablets
may lead to rapid absorption of the drug and dangerous levels of
oxycodone.

The 60, 80 and 160 mg tablets or single doses greater than 40 mg
should only be used by patients who have been using opiods and have
become tolerant to opioid therapy. Administration of large doses to
opioid-naive patients may lead to profound depression of breathing.

The usual adult dose of the oral concentrate solution (20 mg/ml) is 5
mg every 6 hours.

The usual adult dose for the oral concentrate solution (5 mg/ml) is
10-30 mg every 4 hours.
