"A close look at how Oracle installs deceptive software with Java

Obviously Oracle's business practice only applies to
their Java implementations.

They could put it in Oracle Java for Linux if they wanted to
(I don't know if they actually have so).

But IBM Java for Linux, OpenJDK for Linux, GCJ etc. are
not under Oracles control (they do have some heavy influence
on OpenJDK, but ...).

I like the oxymoron "sane Windows user."

The authors doth protest too much, methinks. They have their own
agenda of selling their own snake oil.

We know how Oracle wound up with java. Sun fucked up, Larry swooped
in and got loads of intellectual property and engineering expertise
for pennies on the dollar. It's the American way!

Evidence?

In order for something to be dying, it had to have been alive first, and
then declined.

Evidence for "home desktop" and "other places" is necessary for your
statement to be anything other than blatant trolling.

well, there is Minecraft and OpenOffice, which use Java and run on
desktops...

though hardly a big player, it is not entirely uncommon to run into
software which depends on it.

now, as for the Java installer: I have seen worse...

at least it gives the option to opt out, as opposed to a few installers
I ran into which just install a mountain of adware without giving any
option to opt out.

81% to 61% sure don't sound healthy...

Java is dying. Period.

Fact is 90+% of home users will never miss Java once they do the smart
thing and uninstall it. The web sites and software that use *will*
change. Libre Office is looking to dump Java even now...

Indeed.

I appreciate your not jumping on my error, 66% not 61% is what I should
have posted...

When Homeland Security/CERT start posting recommendations and
instructions for removing Java you know your product is in trouble.

Additionally, at least one major software outfit, Libre Office, has
announced their intentions to scrap Java in favor of another solution.
As it is, only the DB portion of LO relies on Java...

Interestingly that document also states

Not sure what this means in terms of critical code written in Java.
Unfortunately the supplied link seems to be broken.

That's a fairly old link (2010) from some anonymous person (theoracle). The
very specific list of modules using Java is from the Libre Office itself and
is from 2012. I'm inclined to take their word on it.

Yes I do have it installed on a couple of my Linux machines (work and home)
and use it occasionally. I also have Java installed and since I need and
use Java for other things I don't have any plans to remove Java.

It is well known that OO/LO can be used without Java.

You can't use the database and a few other things, but the
rest is working.

Why someone would bother I don't understand (it is just a few
hundred MB of disk space).

But it is certainly doable.
