Persistence just saves stuff to long term storage.  How it does that is 
another matter.  When talking databases, a persistence layer interfaces 
objects to a database (usually a database connection of some sort).  It 
takes care of a lot of the busy work of reading a database entity into 
objects, and writing objects out as database entities.

You can do this manually, but it's really busy work.  Do it once to see 
how it works, then forget it and go for JPA.

I don't know, other than I don't think OO databases are popular or 
practical.  Everyone I know uses the relational variety, or flat files.
