The term "optional operation" is used in interface and abstract class declarations to indicate a method that the implementation may be allowed to throw UnsupportedOperationException. There are two useful places to look for more information: 1. The full description of the method. For example, FloatBuffer's array method is defined to throw UnsupportedOperationException "If this buffer is not backed by an accessible array". 2. Especially in java.util, there are interfaces with many different implementing classes, and you may need to look at the API documentation for the implementing class you are using to find out which operations it supports.
