Any versioning tool that does checkin-checkout should be fine. I haven't used github. I use the git tool with the free GUI program SourceTree. I haven't needed tools like maven or frameworks like Spring for my personal Java project (small business, I wrote the entire API myself with a little help on a couple classes) but you will need both for most Java businesses.
