And I don't know about the Arduino, so I certainly can't answer. Java is not really a hobbiest or "newbie" type of language. It's frequently used on large corporate projects as a middle tier for large web apps. (And I mean LARGE.) Most folks (possibly all folks) on this list are professionals, not hackers. I honestly don't think I've seen any "hacker" types at all on c.l.j.p. You'd probably be best to ask on the Arduino website forums or a mailing list. They might know.
