Since status codes returned to the OS would have to be fixed by a 
specification, I suspect this wouldn't be a problem.  As you pointed out 
in your link, this sort of fixing is often done, for example, the 
Windows header file you linked to.

I'd do it with an public enum myself.  There's no need to get crazy with 
this stuff.
