I know that Orifice sells anything beyond update 22 of JRE version 5
under the "Java for Business" product line, but I'm wondering if there's
a back-door way to get my hands on it without paying the obscene /
insane subscription cost for that product.

Anyone?

Torrents?

File-locker?

AFAIK no.

Nor would I risk liability by recommending something I suspect to violate
Oracle's licensing.

However, I am curious as to what such a thing would do for you? Perhaps
there's another way to accomplish what you seek to accomplish.

Wherefore do you need, or think you need, an obsolete Java version?

Does it have to be Oracle's Java 5? What about
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/java/jdk/linux/download.html#java5
? That version apparently is from 2011-11-22.

What's wrong with Java 6 or 7?

Umm, how is this question appropriate for clj.gui?

It's pretty much the same audience, so cross-posting isn't all that helpful
anyway.

I've set f/u to clj.help.

I'm sure that you would suffer no concievable legal harm by anonymously
posting a suitable download link for the desired item.

> However, I am curious as to what such a thing would do for you?

Windows 98se (enhanced with KernelEx) is my primary OS, and as such I'm
mildly interested in exploring the use of any advanced versions of JRE 5
beyond the public version of update 22.

KernelEx does allow me to install JRE6 - for which I have the most
recent update (30 I think). But for it to work I must disable the "use
next generation plugin" option - what exactly is that anyways?.

> Perhaps there's another way to accomplish what you seek to

I assume that JRE 5 continues to be compatible with Windows 9x/me, so
it's mainly an issue of curiosity in exploring the differences of
running an up-to-date version of JRE 5 on a win-9x system vs running an
up-to-date version of JRE 6.

Now, that said, if this "next generation plug-in" feature was added to
these private versions of JRE 5, then that would be really useful for,
say, Opera (because versions of Opera after 10.6x are not compatible
with JRE unless the "next-gen plugin" option is enabled).

I've now given you an explanation, but you might want to reconsider your
question in light of the fact that Oricrap has gone to some trouble to
engineer / offer a "Java for Business" product line that includes
updates to JRE 5.

There must be some reaon why they continue to privately support JRE 5 -
does anyone here know why?

I didn't know that IBM offers it's own Java JRE. Why do they do that?

I will try some of those.

> What's wrong with Java 6 or 7?

Partially answered above (answer touches on next-gen plugin and
compatibility with win-9x/me). I've tried JRE 7, and it won't install
on win-98 using the same method that is used with JRE 6 (command-line
install using /s silent install switch).

The link you gave is for linux.

I poked around a little and I think this is the only JRE 5 offered by
IBM for windoze platforms:

http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/detail.page?LegacyDocID=MIGR-56888

The file is ibm-java2-jre-ibmpc-142.exe - released Feb 2006. So it's
rather old.

Is that a problem?

You didn't specify an operating system in your original post.

Please respect the followup.

And IBM and Oracle are not the only Java vendors. Have you considered using a
search engine?
