Even if you're not supporting older JVMs, you could look at Suns old 
TableSorter & TableMap implementation, discussed here:

Sun seems to have withdrawn them, but they're in the Xcode distribution 
on Mac OS X: /Developer/Examples/Java/JFC/TableExample.
