Lew: Good question. Invoking invalidate() would be the right choice  
were the OP adding (or removing) components to (or from) the Container 
for subsequent lay out. In this case, repaint() has the effect of adding 
a Runnable, which eventually calls piantComponent(), to the EventQueue.
