I only have Windows to test on, and while I failed
to see the problem in Mozilla and IE, I failed to see
the *applet* (at all) in Opera - it said 'Loading applet..' 
and did not report errors, but the applet never appeared.

Launch the applet using web start, to get a more 
reliable and predictable focus environment.
