The GPL is written from the point of view of the *user*, not the author. The word "rights" in the GPL preamble refers very clearly to the *user*'s rights to share and modify the software. A practical way of ensuring that the user has these rights is by explicitly permitting such activities, using a copyright license. Equating "ownership" with copyright makes very little practical sense in this case. See for example http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/why-free.html . I'd say to stop it at this point, as we're already way off-topic for the group. You and I are arguing about nuances in the meaning of the word "ownership"; others may even be getting confused.
