Just as an aside, the PDP-11 was a superb Forth target.  A lot of
primitives were two or three instructions, and the interrupt structure
and the I/O subsystem were very well-designed; it is certainly the
nicest polyFORTH system I have used.  It's worth noting the
performance advantage you can get from I/O hardware that is really
straightforward: for example, it was possible to handle a serial
interrupt with just a few instructions.  This made it possible to
handle many terminals on what was a pretty small machine.
