Read that as the O/S has set them up for you and you don't need to
read/write them at all. I believe that Alex knows the x86 instruction
set quite well.

When you get round to writing your own code generator, you will find
that measurement is your friend. You will need several x86 CPU
implementations of the same generation to choose optimal opcode
sequences.
