That's how bigForth does it; IMHO the feature is orthogonal to DEFER.  
DEFER is for mutable words, forward is for double recursion and other 
circular caller/callee relationships.  In bigForth, a forward word 
compiles a link to the previous call to that word, and : resolves such 
forward definitions, by walking that chain and replacing the 
destination.
