"C with classes" was the predecessor to C++ but was never released as a product. It's possible that you intended to be rude, in which case you may as well just ignore this reply. Almost all academics have jobs. Only the very rich can be one without having the other. What's more, these are often very useful jobs and, in the early days of programming, "academics" very often worked in commercial research facilities, like Bell Labs, because there were not many University CS departments and anyone who could design a programming language was unlikely to want an academic salary. In that sense, C was a research language -- intended for research into both programming languages and operating systems. No one in industry took it (or Unix) seriously. It was what academics and their students played with until they could get real jobs programming in PL/I, Coral, COBOL or FORTRAN. Coincidentally (because my comments are not really about Lisp) one of the few times I took time out of academia to work for a company, I was writing Lisp. -- Ben.

And, of course, Academics created the Internet as a research tool. "People with jobs" created 200 incompatible networks and the OSI protocol.

Wrong! Corrupted elites don't have jobs but occupations in the public education administration funded by tax payers. The education cost in the US is way overpriced since some conference speakers deem their contribution to US universities is always undervalued. If they're so smart why don't they make their own private company like Trump did? > In that sense, C was a research language -- intended for research into > both programming languages and operating systems. The C language was developped for programming the UNIX operating system sold to AT&T which at the time was the Bell System a state owned company funded by tax payers. The failure risk was zero since the Bell laboratories milked every single american for funding Dennis RITCHIE occupation (and others). That's the reverse side of the medal from so-called heroes... smart peoples with a silver spoon in the mouth.

I think the old generation of programmers is better than the new one... The only error I find it is the excessive confidence in not to do errors (possible they not make errors but the remain 90% of new programmers + I, yes) I'm for "defensive programming" instead, search accurate input for error possible, consider limits exist... I can make one error even in this not apply what I said just now for example...

The best thing they can do for the next generation is to die in silence. The future is for youths! :-)
