For someone implementing a compiler, the language is defined by the standards
document. But for someone who is not implementing a compiler, the language
is ultimatelt defined by the behaviour of compilers. Of course if you rely on the
behaviour of the compiler on a construct the standard declares as "undefined
behaviour" then you take the risk that another conforming compiler will behave
differently. But it's not a game changer, because if you rely on defined but obscure
behaviour, you take the risk that a compiler will not be conforming, or that the
standard will be revised.

I don't agree completely; I see the situation as more symmetric.
I see the standard as a proposed contract between implementers and
users. Neither side is (usually) obligated to accept the contract,
but both sides can choose to do so, and can expect to be able to rely
on the other side to follow the rules. Implementers can provide
non-standard extensions, and users can write code that depends on
those extensions.

An implementation that doesn't at least provide a mode that conforms
to the standard is going to be unpopular, and a programmer who
doesn't know what's guaranteed by the standard and what's specific
to an implementation will have a hard time if they ever want to
use a different implementation.

Well for example the standard doesn't guarantee two's complement
representation (or at least didn't, I think it might have changed). So anyone
who relied on that could have seen their code break. But it so unlikely
that it is hardly worth bothering about.

Then to take the current example, I checked and Ben is right. The use of a union
to type pun is "implementation defined". In C. In C++ it's "undefined". Hence my
confusion. But it's not unlikely that C code will be compiled by a C++ compiler.
Now of course you can say "well a C++ compiler compiles a different language,
so all bets are off", but that's being pedantic rather than useful. The fact is
that a C++ compiler is a C compiler which supports the conservative core subset
of the C language, but not necessarily more esoteric features, and you need to
be aware of that if you undertake to write code snippets which will be generally
useful.

No. You could more reasonably say that the language is defined by the
/specification/ or /documentation/ of the compilers you use, if you are
happy with non-portable code that is only sure of working with those
specific compilers. (And often that is exactly what you want.)

Trial-and-error programming is a /bad/ development methodology, unless
you are able to test your code in every possible choice of input.

If you rely on the behaviour of a compiler as it is, then your code
could easily fail when the compiler is upgraded, or flags are changed,
or bugs are fixed. It could fail when your code is used in a different
way, or when re-arrangements and optimisations lead to different inlining.

You can rely on /documented/ behaviours of the compiler beyond what the
standards guarantee. But relying on how it happens to work when you
test it is relying on luck - you are creating a maintenance nightmare
for the future.

(Very occasionally, there can be good reasons for relying on the exact
details of code produced by a particular compiler. But then the
compiler is part of your source - your code is dependent on an exact
toolchain and flag selection for its correctness.)

You are very close to saying something very dangerous here. And given
your misconceptions about accessing data through pointer casts, I
suspect you are making similar mistakes here.

Virtually all current implementations use two's complement
representation for signed integers. Up until C23, C allowed ones'
complement and sign-magnitude as alternative representations - these are
no long allowed in C23. However, integer types can still have padding
bits in C23.

I agree that it is reasonable to assume two's complement representation
for signed integers, unless you are writing code with extreme portability.

However, when people talk about two's complement signed integers, they
are sometimes talking about signed arithmetic overflows. This is a very
different matter from the representation of the types. And while almost
all current processors will use two's complement wrapping in their
signed arithmetic instructions, C (including C23) does /not/ guarantee
any behaviour for overflows, and C compilers do not, as a rule,
guarantee any behaviour for overflows. Many optimising compilers will
optimise code on the assumption that signed integer arithmetic does not
overflow. This is not new - I first saw it nearly 30 years ago. It is
not just gcc or clang - MSVC also does such optimisations. The only
compilers I know about for which you can rely on wrapping behaviour are
gcc and clang with the "-fwrapv" flag enabled.

This is a fine example for which people write code thinking "my
processor does this, so C will do that too" and often it will work as
expected during initial testing. But it can fail later, or with
different input, or different optimisation flags.

That is why you should stick to /defined/ behaviour when coding. Rely
on behaviour defined by the compiler rather than the C standards if you
don't need portability and like the extra features. But do not write
code that relies on undefined behaviour happening to compile the way you
want it to.

> Then to take the current example, I checked and Ben is right. The use of a union
> to type pun is "implementation defined".

It is fully define behaviour (though the interpretation of the bits as
different type is implementation-defined, like most type
representations). I don't know what you are referring to as "Ben is
right" here, since I am confident that Ben knows how type-punning unions
work in C. ("Ben is right" is usually a safe bet!)

See 6.5.2.3p3 of the standards, along with the accompanying footnote.

No, it is being useful - C and C++ are significantly different
languages. C is roughly a subset of C++, but there are major points of
divergence.

The fact is that C++ compilers are C++ compilers, and C compilers are C
compilers. They might share some common parts - I have never heard of a
C++ compiler that did not have a companion C compiler, other than MSVC
having an extremely limited companion C compiler. (I believe they
finally implemented C99, some 20 years late.)

If a compiler implements a "conservative core subset of the C language",
it is not a C compiler - it's just a partial sort-of-C compiler. If it
does not implement the "more esoteric features", whatever those might
be, then it is not a C compiler. It might still be a useful tool, and
able to handle a useful subset of C, but it is not a C compiler.

If you need to write code that can be handled by such a sort-of C or
subset-C compiler, or code that can be compiled as C and C++ with the
same semantics, then you need to understand the details and limitations.
  And that means understanding the /documented/ languages, features and
limitations.

Agreed, but I'm not entirely sure how it could be useful to write
code that assumes two's complement. In the vast majority of cases,
the code I'd write if I were assured that the implementation uses
two's complement and the code I'd write if I were told that the
target might use some other representation would be identical. A
signed integer type lets me store and manipulate integer values over
a specified range; I rarely care how those values are represented.
If I want to do bit manipulation, I'll use unsigned types.

I could certainly contrive some code that would behave differently
depending on how signed integers are represented, and I have no
doubt there are some cases where it makes sense to write such code
deliberately, but I think such code is rare.

Agreed.  Here's an example:

#include <stdio.h>
#include <limits.h>
int main(void) {
    int n = INT_MAX;
    if (n + 1 > n) {
        printf("%d > %d\n", n + 1, n);
    }
    else {
        printf("%d <= %d\n", n + 1, n);
    }
}

With gcc (without -fwrapv), this program prints (at all optimization
levels):

-2147483648 > 2147483647

(This applies only to the quick experiment I just did, and could vary
with the phase of the moon.)

The bottom line is that the "+" operator in that code does **not** mean
"apply the x86_64 addl instruction to the operands". It means "add the
operands in accordance with the semantics given in the C standard".

[...]

And I've never heard of a C and C++ compiler that share the same front
end. The C and C++ grammars have a lot of similarity, but it would be
insanely awkward to implement a single parser that can handle either
language.

The moon is in a different phase where you are.

But you are demonstrating Keith's point - signed integer overflow is UB,
and there is no way to predict the outcome. It will vary by compiler,
flags, details of the code, and of course, by the phase of the moon.

Here is one: most signed integers that appear in network packets
or files, and are not in textual decimal form, are in two's
complement.

If you assume your machine is two's complement, then the code
for decoding and encoding is simpler.

Under two's complement you can also assume that:

- value conversion between signed and unsigned of equal width preserves
  the bits; e.g  (uint32_t) int32 is a hardware-level noop.

- conversion from wider to narrower simply truncates; if the
  value fits, it is preserved.

- widening conversion sign-extends.

Say we have a 24 bit PCM audio sample in an integer that is 32 or
more bits, like an unsigned long. To write it out as a 24 bit big
endian sample, assuming 8 bit bytes, we can just do this:

  put_byte(stream, sample >> 16);
  put_byte(stream, sample >> 8);
  put_byte(stream, sample);

We know that a two's complement 32 bit value, if it fits into 24
bits, can just be truncated to the lower 24 bits, and we're done.

We also know that narrowing conversions truncate; like when
we call put_byte(stream, sample), when sample is converted to
(unsigned char), that implementation-defined conversion preserves the
least significant 8 bits.

To recover the value we might do:

  (long) get_byte(stream) << 16 |
  (long) get_byte(stream) << 8 |
         get_byte(stream) << 8 |

Then we test for the sign bit, and sign extend:

  if ((sample & 0x800000) != 0)
    sample |= 0xFF000000;

That's bad because it assumes 32 bits. I think could do this without
assuming how wide long is, like this:

  if ((sample & 0x800000) != 0)
    sample |= -0x1000000L;

Or, express that constant as a left shift:

  if ((sample & 0x800000) != 0)
    sample |= (-1L << 24);

In these kinds of situations, assuming two's complement and
certain conversion semantics simplifies the code a bit, and
possibly makes it faster.

I mean, we could extract the value as an unsigned;
say we have a ulong typedef:

  (ulong) get_byte(stream) << 16 |
  (ulong) get_byte(stream) << 8 |
          get_byte(stream) << 8 |

Then we know that our bottom 24 bits are either a positive
value (we are almost done) or a two's complement negative
value, where we take the two's complement to get the
additive inverse positive value, cast to the signed
type and negate it:

  if ((usample & 0x8000000) != 0)
     sample = - (long) ((usample ^ 0xFFFFFF) + 1)
  else
     sample = usample;

The code doesn't look bad, but it's more operations:
XOR, add 1, negate. Under the two's complement
assumption, we just OR in a sign extension mask
and we are done.

I've got exactly that code in the Baby X resource compiler.
gcc is giving me a warning about it when I use the "-pedantic-errors" flag.
(Thanks to Keith Thompson for pointing out these problems in the code).

I think the one situation where it could be important is in connection
with external data. If you want to read or write a file, or send a
network packet, and the format of that file or packet requires two's
complement signed integers then it is definitely very convenient to be
able to assume that your integers are already in that format. Combine
it with an assumption (usually valid, and easily checked at
compile-time) that your unsigned char's are 8 bit, and it makes your
code very much simpler.

I can't say if it (sharing a front-end for C and C++) is done or not - I
don't know the details of all toolchains! I think it is conceivable
that C could be parsed as a variation of a subset of C++, especially if
the compiler did not support all features of C. (There are many
embedded compilers that have outdated or limited support for standards.)
  Maybe some of the slightly bizarre optional features added to later C
standards - such as making VLAs and complex numbers optional in C11 -
were requested by groups making common C and C++ front-ends? I have no
evidence or references here, it's merely a vague idea.

I think it is a more common for compilers to have different front-ends
for C and C++ (and perhaps other languages - gcc and llvm support many),
but share a common middle-end, then have back-ends that are language
independent and target-dependent.

But to be safe and general, I referred to "companion compilers" -
usually when you install a C++ compiler of any sort, you also get a C
compiler with the toolchain.

This is a fake result. gcc even at -O0 does not actually attempt to do
the comparison, it just calls that first printf anyway. Code for the
other printf does not appear in the compiler output (this is version 10.x).

That is the case even when `n` is external. It assumes that n+1 must be
greater than n, always.

If I compare two externs a and b (set elsewhere to INT_MAX+1 and
INT_MAX), then I get <= like my compilers.

This means that gcc can give inconsistent results when apparently
comparing the same two pairs of values.

TBH I found it hard to predict the results of x64's cmp followed by jle.
But what's not hard however is predicting the result of INT_MAX+1. My
tools which don't try to be clever, will give more consistent results.

gcc assumes ints don't wrap, but sometimes they do.

No, it's not. It's exactly the output the program produced when I
compiled and ran it.

I lied about it?

Which is a valid assumption.

That's not surprising. (Of course nothing was actually set to
INT_MAX+1; something was set to the undefined result of evaluating that
expression.)

Certainly. That kind of thing is completely unsurprising for code whose
behavior is undefined.

I can explain the language rules to you. I can't understand them for you.

Try this one.

#include <stdio.h>
#include <stdint.h>
#include <string.h>

int main(void)
{
   uint32_t nanpattern = 0x7f801234;
   float x;

   memcpy(&x, &nanpattern, 4);
   printf("x %f\n", x);
   if (x + 1 > x)
   {
      printf("Doesn't honour nan\n");
   }
   else
   {
      printf("Nan handled correctly\n");
   }

   return 0;
}

If it behaves in the same way then it is bugged.

On my system, it prints:
    x nan
    Nan handled correctly
when compiled with both gcc and clang at all optimization levels.

> If it behaves in the same way then it is bugged.

You may be right (assuming 0x7f801234 copied into a float yields a NaN;
I don't think the C standard specifies that), but I haven't given it
much though.

For any two valid integer values x and y, exactly one of x<y, x==y, x>y
is true. That's not the case for floating-point values, which means
that a compiler cannot assume (x + 1 > x) without information about the
value of x (given an implementation that supports NaNs).

That's why I printed it out. Just to check.
IEEE 754 mandates a particular pattern for a 32 bit float, and virtually everyone
now uses that standard. But the C standard doesn't require it. However IEEE 754
doesn't impose endianness requirements. But usually when interpreted as a 32
bit integer, the sign bit will be the most significant bit, the exponent bits the next bits,
and the mantissa the least significant bits.

If x is less than INT_MAX, then this sets y to x + 1 and the comparison
is always true.  Agreed?

If x is equal to INT_MAX, then "if (x + 1 > x)" is undefined behaviour
and the compiler can do anything it likes - including assuming that the
comparison is true. The assignment "y = x + 1;" is also undefined
behaviour, and the compiler can put anything it likes in y - including
trapping values, leaving it uninitialised, keeping a "mental" note that
it is bigger than x, or firing off an email to the programmer's boss
saying that the programmer needs a refresher course on basic C.

The simplest, most efficient code consistent with all that is for the
compiler to assume the comparison is true. And that is the /desirable/
behaviour, because people who write correct code deserve to get
efficient results, not bigger and slower code just because some other
programmer has made a mistake.

And it is desirable, at least to some people - such as myself, and
presumably also the gcc developers.

No. gcc on my machine hard-codes that output without bothering to
execute the comparison to see what the hardware does with it.

Because it makes an assumption about the result of comparing n+1 with n.
If those same two values were compared via variables where it did not
not know their values and their relationship, it would be forced to do
an actual comparison.

On my machine, that produced a different result even still comparing
values of INT_MAX+1 with INT_MAX.
