That depends on compiler. gcc, tcc, bcc can directly link to DLLs. Ones
like MSVC use .lib files (I don't know why they are necessary).

This is C specific and seems to vary by compiler. I could never
understand how that works, and I've never used it.

With gcc generating the DLL, it seems to just export any function that
isn't static. bcc does the same, but tcc is peculiar.

So, how do you control what functions to export from a .so file?

All global symbols are exported by default; like the would be
in a .a archive, only dynamically.

The way to get control over this is to write a version script

https://ftp.gnu.org/old-gnu/Manuals/ld-2.9.1/html_mono/ld.html#SEC25

This is given to the linker as another file argument.

How it differs is that the executable has to nominate the specific
libraries by indicating the library, which came in via the -l option,
and then look for specific symbols from specific libraries that it has
attached.

Under the hood, the semantics is much like dlopen() of specific
liraries to obtain a handle and then doing dlsym(handle, "name")
to look for specific names from specific libs.

Imagine it could specify just symbols, without specifying where
they come from; that's a big difference.

Would this not require that no symbol be present in more than
one library, i.e. that there is a single symbol namespace across the
entire system?

That would seem to be a non-starter.

I sort of addressed that in the parts that were snipped above.
We also have the problem that multiple versions of the same library
can exist (or multiple version nodes within the same library).

There would have to be some mechanism to bind the visible,
simple symbols to unique identities under the hood.

E.g the <stdio.h> header could have some magic so that
when you include it and call puts, a complex symbolic reference
is generated under the hood and imbued into the resulting
executable.

Insert other handwaving as necessary.

versioning is a problem, i recently wrota a thought that given dll should be versioned by letters not numbers , most probably by\ig letters like version "A"
means some interface when lib is upbuild and shipped most rpbably it should contain "A B" strings meaning it conform to both "A" and "B" when "A" interface would stay but work slightly different it probably can be "A2 B"

i think its not bad as people working on dll probably would think if to add new
official version and its letter, also shoudl be aware that what they name "A"
is officially only what they named "A" and new added unoficcialy functions
between "A" and "B" are unoficcial

this is imo easy way to tame that great potential chaos...
(also they should be avare not to break "A" unles they want and then delete "A"
string)

still this wersioning could be a pain imo... there could be probably a tool
some "version guerd" that you could maybe use to set a version like

version_guard green.fire.dll "A"

that will add an "A" versioning to a given dll and produces something like
header/certyficate to be able to guard "A" interface from changes just not lett it
be changed (it could or maybe even should be build in compiler)

maybe that would help

there is also a problem of preserving interface (which may be guarded somewhat programatically) and guard the exact efects of how it work - as you can have "A"
interface and quite different work (as i said i rather see this versions should be named by arabic numbers)..im not sure how compiler could quard the second thing (partially it could - by assuming all branches below "A" interface should
ask programmer if some changes there for sure not violate the behaviur
-and if do they should note it is not compatible to arabic number and at another versioning chnge the arabic number)

this is all pain but imo seems better what there is now

Of course not. But the functions in <math.h> are part of the C language
just like malloc and printf. It's not the same kind of thing at all.

When linking for Linux:
pthread - yes
ncurses - no
openssl - probably, not sure
For the rest of them, I don't know what they are.

The Windows program below uses the maths library, and the equivalent of
'dl'.

It builds to a 2.5KB executable (with my compiler, which is the minimum
size).

It automatically links to dynamic libraries msvcrt.dll, gdi32.dll,
kernel32.dll, user32.dll, all of which are likely already memory-resident.

Between them those export 5000 functions (and some variables), yet it
does not impact the executable size: they are shared libraries.

I don't need to muck about with -lm or -ldl.

(C is a little backward, but in my language, if the functions from a
particular library are declared with the FFI, it will automatically
include that DLL for dynamic linking.

In more complex cases (eg. functions are spread over diverse DLLs), the
DLLs have to be listed manually, but this is done in the source code. No
extra command line inputs are needed. The compiler input is always just
the name of the lead module.)

I believe the "-lm" thing is, as you say, just historical. C libraries
were split to reduce their size, and since the maths functions were
often unneeded but often depend on each other, that seemed a natural
split. For many C libraries these days, libm.a is actually empty - it
exists solely so that "-lm" finds something if you use it.

A test with dlopen/dlsym managed to find "sqrt" only from "libm.so.6".
It coulldn't find it using "libc.so.6".

But I couldn't find either of those actual files on WSL Ubuntu, only
something that corresponded to the latter.

The 'nm' (namelist) command is quicker.

$ nm /usr/lib64/libc.so.6  | grep " [tT] "  | wc -l
4573

So there are 4573 functions available in libc.so.6.

$ nm /usr/lib64/libc.so.6  | grep -i sqrt
$

On this implementation (fedora core), sqrt is not part of libc.

$ nm /usr/lib64/libm.so.6  | grep -i sqrt

Most big processors have a hardware square root function. So I would hope
compilers would inline calls rather than use a library.

On many "mid level" processors these square root functions are not fully
IEEE compliant, and will not be used by default. The library function
will check for negative values, NaNs, etc., before using the hardware
instruction. If you know all your calculations are using nice real
numbers, you can use "-ffast-math" on gcc or clang to get more efficient
code.

But that all depends on the target processor, the compiler, and the
flags. Functions like "sqrt" will exist in the library regardless of
how well the compiler optimises.

i think to use this there should be some new calling convention to put in
declarations/header like
__hardware double sqrt(double);

(may be bester looking word)

btw the risc vs cisc 'discussion' is still valid imo..
is valid for example here becouse such things like sin, sqrt etc you may
count by using 'series' (or how it is called in english) with basic arithmetic)..
which is risc solution with this advantage you may chose yourself how many bits of precision you need (sometimes with simpel division you also dont need 50
bits but just like 10 or something..though i dont know if division is to count by series too)

cisc in turn can be eral optimisation..and if cisc work im not against it (though it better should be somewhat elegant and real usable...more interesting it would be to found "cisc" cases which would improve general coding for some big/notable factor liek 50% or something though today memory bandwidth is probably total bottleneck not the cpu (assuming memopry bandwidth is not a cpu problem, as i dont know if it is ram pieces or cpu problem)

Yet, C programs can use `printf` without needing to specifically link in
a library for it. What's the difference with `sqrt`?

One difference is that many machines these days actually implement sqrt
in the hardware, but very few implement printf in hardware. Yet guess
which one is made optional.

How big is the library (libm.so?) anyway?

My own library from 8-bit days, where I also had to emulate basic
floating point arithmetic, was 4KB IIRC, on a 64KB machine. What's the
hit these days?

From stackoverflow answering why -lm is needed:

"Because of ridiculous historical practice that nobody is willing to
fix. Consolidating all of the functions required by C and POSIX into a
single library file would not only avoid this question getting asked
over and over, but would also save a significant amount of time and
memory when dynamic linking, since each .so file linked requires the
filesystem operations to locate and find it, and a few pages for its
static variables, relocations, etc."

https://stackoverflow.com/questions/1033898/why-do-you-have-to-link-the-math-library-in-c

On Windows, such functions are in msvcrt.dll, and the total size of
that, for 1400 functions in total, is 700KB. But since it is so widely
used, it is near-100% certain that it is already in memory.

(I suspect libm is already incorporated into a bigger library, but '-lm'
is needed for 'historical' reasons.)

But this is by the by; in my stuff I haven't needed to worry about
special options to include maths libraries since ... never. Other than
having to /implementent/ such libraries and support.

I'm just bemused by C users (and on Linux) having to bother themselves
with it.

It's just a historic baggage.

More programs in a system can be expected to use math functions
than, say, setsid()!

Why is setsid linked by default, but not math functions?

If even one program in a given system installation uses math function,
you save disk space by having that in the same library image
instead of a separate libm.so.6 (with wasteful symlinks thereto taking
up more inodes).

The fix is to have a dummy, empty library for those programs that
specify -lm in their build, so that they don't break.

I rember reading some article years ago about how some libary
was planning to remove the need for -lm; I seem to be misremember
that it was glibc? If so, what happened?

I think some systems do this? Ah, OK, here is one example. Do you know
of the C library called Musl? It's a Glibc alternative. Some distros
like Alpine Linux, are based on it.

https://www.musl-libc.org/faq.html

  Why is libm.a empty?

On musl, the entire standard library is included in a single
library file — libc.a for static linking, and libc.so for
dynamic linking. This significantly improves the efficiency of
dynamic linking, and avoids all sorts of symbol interposition
bugs that arise when you split the libraries up — bugs which
have plagued glibc for more than a decade.

Why not just omit libm.a, libpthread.a, etc. entirely? POSIX says
-lm, -lpthread, etc. are valid options to the compiler and
conforming applications must use these options when they need the
corresponding functionality, and the easiest way to comply with that
requirement (and avoid breaking applications) is with empty .a files
by those names. What is ridiculous is that there are many funtions
in the main library, including ones which are very rare.

So they are doing exactly what I say; -lm is there so that your
compiler command line doesn't break, effectively as a backward
compatibility dongle, and it works via an actual empty library.
