Fast version of fibonacci depend on fast computation of matrix
power (of a two by two matrix). One way to have fast matrix power
is to diagonalize and use floating point (which is essentially
what is done by Binet's Formula), but as you noted this needs extra
precision. Tim's version looks like somewhat obscure variant
of fast matrix powering. This has advantage of doing all computations
on integers. Of course, to make sense this must use increased
precision, preferably arbitrary precision arithmetic.

I started not from a matrix power approach but from a simple
recurrence relationship: if we know fib(k-1) and fib(k), we can
compute fib(2k-1) and fib(2k) (and so also fib(2k+1)) using just
multiplication and addition. After that it's just a matter of
deciding which track to go down.

This gives fibonacci(186) is 332825110087067562321196029789634457848
(the largest value that fits in 128 bits).

Depends on the cost of a cache miss. Because the computational
version is very fast, I tend to prefer it over a lookup table
with its higher variability.

Yes, that is the perennial problem with floating point. Also
it's hard to scale up floating point, and fairly easy with

That's fine; to each their own. In Rust you can mostly ignore
it, though the resulting code would be somewhat unidiomatic.
If one is coming from an imperative, procedural programming
background, writing expression-oriented functional code can feel
extremely disorienting at first. But it does tend to lead to
code with fewer side-effects and less shared state, composed
mostly of pure functions (that is, nothing is mutated). I claim
such code is easier to test and modify, and with a little care,
one can often make inductive proofs about its actual behavior.

ML has a bit of an odd history; it started out as a "meta
language" for an automated theorem prover (itself written in
Lisp), and then grew into a full language in its own right.
An effort to standardize a variety of dialects resulted in
Standard ML (SML), which is notable for being defined by a
formal specification. It saw some success in academia, but
little industry penetration.
An effort to merge object-oriented techniques and FP at INRIA
resulted in OCaml ("Objective Caml"; "caml" was another dialect
favored at INRIA). Note that this presaged Scala, another
language that attempts a merger between FP and OO techniques, by
more than two decades.
OCaml seems to be the most popular descendent, currently, and is
used fairly widely in both academia and industry (I mean...as
such things go). Jane Street, the quantitative training firm,
uses it heavily and promotes and supports it.
The other popular functional language, that largely supplanted
SML, is Haskell, which is popular in both academia and industry.
An informal way to think about the it is that SML is Edinburgh,
Haskell is Glasgow, and OCaml is French. :-D

It is. In FP, essentially everything is an expression that
yields some value, though that value may be an empty tuple
(often called "unit"); that's the rough equivalent of `void` in
C. Expression orientation is useful in that one can write things
like, `let foo = if cond then a else b`; in C, the "ternary
conditional operator" is an expression for this purpose (e.g.,
`foo = cond ? a : b;`), because `if` is a statement.

That doesn't match my experience. Maybe because I separate the
"expression-oriented" and "functional" aspects.
Functional is certainly peculiar if coming from an imperative
(procedural) language paradigm. Thus far I agree.

Well, depending on the language paradigm, you can modify code
also in other languages in other forms clearly and efficiently;

I've no experience in testing functional programs, though. All

(including recursive) code with a debugger.

My entire point is that this should be intuitive, somebody should be able to write "a * b" without reading a 700-page reference first. As to the question of overflow, since they are using a lower-level language with primitive machine types, they shouldn't expect anything clever; they just need a simple statement of what might happen. I think I summarised the possibilities in a recent post. So there are two things: * A cheat-sheet summarising how C and typical compilers deal with it now * What my preference would be if C was to change I think these have already been convered. Meanwhile I will probably add '-fwrapv' to 'fno-strict-aliasing' in my script for compiling generated C when using gcc**. It might cost some percentage points in performance, but it will have gained some due to programs being presented in a single file so allowing whole-program optimisation. (** A bug in Tiny C stops me using that. While I can't use my bcc because transpiled C is mainly used to support running on other platforms.)

I think I see your misunderstanding.
Dan Cross (who can correct me if I've misinterpreted him) told you
that he saw "no evidence that you understand the matter particularly
well". That was, I'm reasonably sure, based entirely on what you've
written here.
You replied with a summary of your background, apparently intended
to prove your "credentials".
Nobody asked for that, and it doesn't matter here. Dan correctly
said that your background does not tell us that what you say about
C has more credibility than if we knew nothing about you.
What you write here matters here. What you've done elsewhere
doesn't. I don't think anyone here has said otherwise. You started
the whole "credentials" thing by bragging about your past projects.
You've demonstrated an inability to correctly infer what other
people are thinking, so perhaps you thought Dan was asking you to
share your background as evidence that you understand C.

It does not matter that the processor manuals unambiguously defined the effect of overflow in instruction execution - wrong answers are wrong answers. (Partial calculations could, of course, make use of defined wrapping semantics, carry flags, etc., but not actual application calculations.)

In the compilers I write and in the languages I implement, such overflow behaviour is guaranteed, when an i32 calculation needs to have an i32 result. I've tried doing exactly that on numerous occasions, but you respond

nasal demons. The point of these fantasy alternatives is to clarify

It's UB because the C standard says it's UB. We could discuss the
historical factors that led to what the C standard says, but you

C23 mandates two's complement as the only permitted representation
for signed integers. It did not change the fact that signed
overflow has undefined behavior. Is there any point in discussing

To be clear, I have no problem with someone writing non-portable
code that relies in a particular implementation and set of options.
If you need wraparound for some reason, that's probably easier than
implementing it in 100% portable C.

Certainly, a conforming C compiler could guarantee wraparound
semantics for signed overflow. This is not news.
You understand, of course, that most C compilers don't do this,
and none are required to. In fact, there doesn't seem to be a lot
of demand for such compilers, though some do provide options for it
(disabled by default).

People explaining such things use "fantasy" alternatives to make them more memorable. It's perfectly true that the C standard allows nasal demons. It's only reality that prohibits them. In recent years I've preferred to use realistic examples rather than more memorable but unrealistic examples, just because people seem to misunderstand why unrealistic examples were being used. It's important to understand that the consequences could be far less bizarre, and still be unacceptably bad. Once execution of code that has undefined behavior becomes inevitable, an implementation is free to generate machine code with any behavior that is convenient. The single most common form of this is that if something needs to be true in order for the behavior to be undefined, the implementation is free to optimize on the assumption that it won't be true at the time the code is executed. For code with defined behavior, this allows removal of dead code, which is why people want their implementations to perform such optimizations. For people relying upon behavior that they incorrectly believe to be required, such optimizations often results in their expectations being dashed.

When reading the discussions with Bart I sometimes got the mental picture of a mistake that "some" chess players make; they're intellectually capable of thinking out a tactical attack 5+ moves ahead, but disregard completely what the opponent might do, and then wonder why they are checkmated in the 3rd move. Again, that is factual. You are inferring things - including imagined insults - from what he wrote. Dan did not say you wrote toy compilers, nor did he say (here) that you were not an expert - he said that the experience of having written a compiler or designed a programming language does not automatically mean that person is an expert on compilers, language design, or any particular language. People should judge /your/ expertise, or lack thereof, in language design, knowledge of C, or anything else based on your posts. They should not judge it on what you say about the tools you have written or your economic success. (They can perhaps judge your business sense on your economic success - but there is no reason to suppose that it is remotely connected to your choice to use your own language, or any details of that language. Maybe if your software had been written in C, name "Autocad" would only be found in history books.
