I think this is not because C is used so often in practice,
but because C is a good language for learning for system
-oriented programming.
In practice, C is usually too uneconomical compared to other
languages. This means that you need more time to do the same
task and you make more mistakes.

It would be interesting to reflect why C++ has gone down so much. Of
course I have my ideas (just too difficult to learn) but it would be
nice if we could make a common diagnostic.

Without falling into personal wars of course.

Being difficult to learn could also result in *more* search engine
activity. :-)

C++ programmers don't need to look stuff up on the Internet!

Especially they need to do it because C++ is a complex language.

I think you got the target. C++ is really hard to master and now , for many things there are better alternative from an economic point of view . Java or C#, in their domains offer good alternative. C# on windows can be used quite for everything ( for the common tasks ) and it is simpler than C++ and much faster for developing . Java is even simpler than C++ and completely portable .
Python is really handy for doing "fast thing" so C++ is used for niche applications .
C on the other hand is fast to learn, simple and really powerfull. It is not object oriented, but if it is well used it can create good reusable and isolated code ( not like an OO but not a mess ) and there are plenty libraries you can use with C. People often think that C misses many things ( stl or adt in general and other things ) but the philosophy is different. I give you the core, for the rest, choose the library you like and for many things there are a lot of library to use

Not in my experience[0]. But this is offtopic, since you (wisely)
trimmed comp.lang.c++ from the Newsgroups: list/

/Jorgen

[0] Unless you define "master" to include the parts of the language
that's not needed for a typical program.

I think you mean something different from what you're saying.
What I think you mean is it isn't (really) hard to get a good
working knowledge of C++. For example, iterators are a language
element we expect often would be used in a typical program. I
think it isn't hard to get a good working knowledge of C++
iterators. I think it is hard though to master C++ iterators.
Does this description match what you want to express?

Yes. The poster I quoted used the word "master" but seemed to mean
your "good working knowledge".

I think that is has been formerly used in places where now Java and
.NET are used. Many business-applications have been written in C++
because there wasn't any alternative in the past.
Now it is only used where systems-programming and / or performance
are required.

c is also hard to learn, guess how many time took to me tu fully understand c - 10 years

recently i think C community (or society, or how to call it) worldwide needs one thing: good book on modern c, and recently i think if i shouldnt wrote it

but the problem is probably publishing that

C is extremely easy to learn. I learned when I was 14 with the
K&R-book in a week (with a good assembly-background). But it is
painful to write larger programs in C because C lacks modern
language-facilities.

you never learned it...and this makes you talk untrue bulshit on it..you seimple seem to dont know how to write sole decent program in c (and get off, btw i lost patience for you, im sorry)

You cant assess this. You are a bloody beginner and you don't
have the mindset to be a programmer. This will never change.

hmm, i will think

its not that i find a writing a book on modern c so much fun (i know other numerous sources of fun), but the fact is people need that (they may dont know they need that hovever)

the worry is if i would get so much pages to fill whole book, as i wopuld like to tell on most important things and if you talk only on most important things it may not be so long

couls do some pieces on

1) what is c and what it 'got' (types constructs)
2) low level implementation/translation (a dose on dlls as its so much important)
3) on naming and code organisation
4) a dose on optimisation (teach people how to measure as most dont know it well)
5) ???
6) ???
7) ???

think i would need at least 70 pages or so
