Bart is the kid who questions the Emperor's new clothes.

You have a software system that has accumulated a mountain of now
unnecessary cruft. It's fair to ask why that mountain still exists.

All I'm hearing is excuses.

And after all this discussion about how great 'int32_t' is that we
shouldn't need to create aliases, now apparently we're not allowed to
use it unless we're an end-user?

Because the use of 'int32_t' in my library will expose it to a user who
has not sanctioned the use of stdint.h.

So much for C now having 'built-in' fixed-width types!

Without the maintainers of Newlib being in the loop, the debate
isn't well informed.

The main takeway message is that standard headers cannot introduce
identifiers willy-nilly. For instance if we include <stdlib.h>
we don't expect int32_t to be defined.

Standard headers introduce nonstandard identifiers as extensions; e.g.
<stdio.h> on POSIX declares fileno, and <string.h> declares strdup.
That sort of thing is done with care; there is way to hide those
declarations.

You wanted to know why newlib's _default_types.h cannot just include
<stdint.h>. The reason was that that header is the basis for
Newlib's definition of <stdint.h>.

In the open source C compiler and library landscapes, C implementations
are formed by combining separate compilers and libraries. GNU C
comes with a few headers, the others are supplied by a choice of
library, which is up to the system integrator to choose.

The <stdint.h> header didn't always exist. I'm guessing that at
some point, libraries started introducing it in parallel with
compilers.

E.g. on an Ubuntu system here, there is a GCC version of stdint.h
which has this:

#fndef _GCC_WRAP_STDINT_H
#if __STDC_HOSTED__
# if defined __cplusplus && __cplusplus >= 201103L
#  undef __STDC_LIMIT_MACROS
#  define __STDC_LIMIT_MACROS
#  undef __STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS
#  define __STDC_CONSTANT_MACROS
# endif
# include_next <stdint.h>
#else
# include "stdint-gcc.h"
#endif
#define _GCC_WRAP_STDINT_H
#endif

You see what it's doing? If __SDCT_HOSTED__ is enabled, which
looks like it means "we are a hosted C implementation (i.e. with a
library)".

If the implementation is hosted, then use the library's <stdint.h>.

Otherwise, fall back on "stdint-gcc.h".

Yes, yes, in your solo, greefield project, this doesn't make sense.

You can provide the compiler and library all from a single vendor;
none of this nonsense of different pieces coming from different
sources. And you're the only customer too, so any time you make a
breaking change, you just fix all your code and move on.

So anyway, the contract between GCC and a library is that if the
library chooses to provide <stdint.h>, that library is on its
own; it must calculate the contents by itself, without being
able to crib anything from GCC's "stdint-gcc.h".

So just docuement that your library uses stdint.h like any user code is
allowed to.

YOU aren't under the restrictions of an implementation (unless you ARE
the implementation).

No, Bart doesn't understand that there still is a use for that "cruft".

See Malcolm's post about one hour before this one.

It looks like introducing stdint.h doesn't magically solve the problem
of providing C with standard fixed width types. It just means endless
programs and libraries having conditional blocks like that shown in his
post.

I've seen worse in libraries like SDL2.

/I/ think that C99 could have introduced new 'int32_t' etc as proper
built-in types, not requiring a header, so always available. But with
the ability, for a probationary period of a decade, say, to allow those
built-ins to be overriden by user typedefs.

So:

     int32_t x; // this always works just like 'int'

But:

     typedef int int32_t; // this also works

In this case 'int32_t' becomes a user-identifier, just like it is know
when you don't use stdint.h.

I will need to check the viability of such a built-in 'int32_t' being
used for variable, function, struct/enum tag, member and label names.

C already allows a typedef 'int32_t' to be used for all those, which is
yet one more bizarre quirk (is there no end to them!). This program is
apparently legal:

     #include <stdint.h>

     struct int32_t {int32_t int32_t;} Int32_t;

It illustrates well why I consider the design of C, a systems language
just like mine, so whacko. In my syntax:

     record int32 = (int32 int32)
     int32 Int32

the first int32 is not allowed; int32 is already a type. If I fix that,
that third int32 is not allowed: you can't use a standard type as an
identifier.

The same applies to that Int32, since this is case-insensitive. This all
forces you to write saner programs.

 > No, Bart doesn't understand that there still is a use for that "cruft".

Bart understands that it works poorly and that there could have been a
much better solution. Nearly 25 years on from C99:

* You still have code both pre-C99 and post-C99 that apparently needs to
   conditionally define types like int32_t depending on compiler,
   version, the presence of flags like __int32_t and so on

* You can't use int32_t in a system header

* The use of int32_t in a user library requires that the need for
   stdint.h is documented, but can still cause problems as shown
   in Malcolm's post

* As shown above, you can use the typedef int32_t as a user identifier
   in several contexts. My proposal would not fix that until the
   probationary period in over. Then it would need explicit enabling.

Part of Bart's problem is that in his world, he is the sole language
designer, compiler implementer, library writer, and application code
programmer. That even applies to his C world, as well as his own
language, where his C compiler supports an unspecified
subset/superset/variation of some unspecified C standard. So he is not
used to the idea of making tools that handle existing code, or backwards
compatibility, or dealing with awkward styles of coding. He doesn't
have the same distinction between user-code and implementation code - if
he wants a function in his program, he can put it in user code or make
it a new keyword in the language with equal ease. And he is used to his
standard library headers and implementations being written in the same
style as user code, because they are written by the same person and have
no clear boundaries.

My C compiler was intended to handle existing code. For example, the
220,000-line sqlite3.c was a brutal test input; it would go wrong on
line 113,981 and you would have to figure out why.

But in the end it produced an executable (how well it works, I don't
know; I can't use SQL). It even managed to compile Malcolm's resource
compiler the other day, which was then able to translate a JPEG file
into C data.

I learnt a huge amount about C, about C system header files, about how
hard it is to create a tool that will deal with arbitrary inputs. It's
years of work.

One problem is that software is written to work with one tool-chain, say
based on gcc. But gcc has had 35 years' benefit of people reporting bugs
so that they are fixed. Lesser compilers are at an disadvantage.

I also learnt a lot of bad things about C, and that system header files
are a barely held-together patchwork of conditional blocks, typedefs,
macros and special cases.

They do not look robust. I am not surprised not one wants to tidy them
up: everything would break!

Some features are poorly specified, or I don't like them or agree with
them, so I can't or won't implemement them.

I just do not like the language anyway: it is poorly designed, and some
features are unbelievably bad and dangerous. The various standards,
high-end compilers (which are given a great deal of latitude) and all
sorts of tooling do a half-decent job of making the language useful, but
it is still awful in my opinion.

Probably 1000 times more effort has gone into complex tooling for C to
get around its problems, than would have been needed to fix up the
language in the earlier stages.

 > if
 > he wants a function in his program, he can put it in user code or make
 > it a new keyword in the language with equal ease.

Isn't that exactly what gnu C does with all its extensions? They're just
more careful about the choice of keyword.

My new features were experimental or proofs of concept.

So, like, it doesn't occur to you that maybe there might exist test
cases to validate the behavior of sqlite3.c, and these are relevant
to whether it was compiled right?

Obviously you have no idea how much effort it took to get even that far.
(Have a look at sqlite3.c sometime.)

Debugging any problems was pointless on a project of this size. I did
that on smaller programs, but even that was a nightmare when you have an
unfamiliar open source application of 10s of 1000s of lines, bristling
with typedefs, nested macros and so on.

For one thing, any bug will lie not within the C code, but in the compiler.

Now I would use a different approach to testing, but I'm no longer
maintaining that project as a C compiler; it is a conversion tool.

But here is that sql test in action (this gives me a kick, even if
everyone else wants to piss over all it):

     c:\cx>bcc sql
     Compiling sql.c to sql.exe

     c:\cx>sql
     SQLite version 3.25.3/BCC 2018-11-05 20:37:38
     Enter ".help" for usage hints.
     Connected to a transient in-memory database.
     Use ".open FILENAME" to reopen on a persistent database.
     sqlite> .print "Hello World"
     Hello World
     sqlite> .quit

(sql.c = sqlite3.h + sqlite3.c + shell.c to form a standalone app. About
250Kloc using my windows.h.)

No, that (like so much else) is just in your imagination.

Everyone in this thread is perfectly aware of the short-comings of C.
Everyone knows that plenty of the parts of C standard library headers is
a mess (it's not just Newlib, though that might be one of the messiest).
  The rest of us understand why, and understand that it doesn't matter
for people using C.

You are not telling anyone anything new, nor exposing hidden secrets.

It kind of matters. For instance my IDE has a "goto function definition" feature
when you right click on a function name. If you right click on a standard library
function, it will take you to the header. If the defintion is readable, it reminds
you how to use the function. If not, it's useless (this is more of a problem with
C++).

You've heard of the term 'code smell'? Well stuff like that just
completely stinks.

50 years' plus and a /systems/ program language is incapable of
describing a simple machine type without making a dog's dinner of it?

(It doesn't even create the type; it's making it possible for some other
code to create the type!)

OK. So you don't think there is, right now, any other shorter solution
to that set-up code which uses an #if-#else ladder to define __int32_t?
Bear in mind there might be 7 more lots of code like that to cover all 8
types!

And you don't think that C99 could have been done any differently to
make such code shorter, or unnecessary?

(I've just spent 20 minutes doing an experiment: adding an optional
/built-in/ type 'int32_t' to my C compiler.

Unless told otherwise, 'int32_t` is a built-in alias (in my case for
'int'), but not exactly, as it is a self-contained token - you can't do
unsigned int32_t for example; parsing C types is messy, very messy).

So I can use 'int32_t' without needing a header. To compile code which
assumes it is only available inside stdint.h, or which includes that
header, I need the legacy code option '-old'.

For the hell of it, I added a 'byte' type (unsigned char). It took a
minute extra.)

That was only in a specific library, Newlib.

The GCC header stdint-gcc.h just does this:

#ifdef __INT32_TYPE__
typedef __INT32_TYPE__ int32_t;
#endif

The compiler somehow predefines these symbols, and so the header just
tests for the ones that exists and defines the public typedefs.

> And you don't think that C99 could have been done any differently to
> make such code shorter, or unnecessary?

The only thing C99 could have done differently would have been to
arrive decades earlier.

Ideally, Newlib shouldn't be defining a <stdint.h> header at all;
it should come from the compiler!

If <stdint.h> were some ancient thing that long preceded the Newlib
project by decades, the library might perhaps have taken it for
granted that the compiler provides it, and not bother trying to
make its own.

That can't be blamed on C99; C99 doesn't specify (nor forbid) that an
implementation is a system that is made from pieces that come from
different parties, like unrelated compiler people and library people,
where there cna be overlap about who provides what header and such.

> (I've just spent 20 minutes doing an experiment: adding an optional
> /built-in/ type 'int32_t' to my C compiler.

You don't seem to understand that this breaks a contract.

C programs are free to define int32_t themselves if they have
not included a header which defines it. If there is a conflicting
file-scope definition (or worse, some built-in feature), which doesn't
get out of the way of the user's definition, then those programs
break.

No C compiler vendor that has users other than themselves can do this,
no matter how easy it is.

(Or rather, they can provide it as a nonconforming extension, which is
disabled in a conforming mode. Nonconforming extensions that can be
turned off is how you can make a nicer dialect of C, which is
compatible. GNU C has a bunch of them.)

> Unless told otherwise, 'int32_t` is a built-in alias (in my case for

That just seems silly; if you have typedef working, you can make it a
typedef. Typedef is exactly a type aliasing mechanism. A typedef can be
built in: it can constructed on startup and inserted into the scope as
if a declaration were read.

If int32_t is a typedef, you can lexically shadow it:

  { int int32_t = 3; }

If that is not possible with a built-in alias, then it's just a broken
typedef that doesn't play along with scopes.

That misses the point that Newlib is designed to be "part of the
implementation" in a world where the complier writer doesn't provide a
full implementation, but depends on a libary writer to finish it.

This makes the library-implementers job tough, as they need to figure
out (or hopefully read in the documentation) how the various compilers
provide the fundamental information about the implementation, and build
the headers to support the parts the compiler-implementer doesn't.

I really don't get why you insist on making stuff up. I haven't said
anything like that. Maybe there is a shorter and neater way to achieve
the needs of Newlib in its headers - maybe there isn't. I haven't
studied the code or the targets of Newlib.

> And you don't think that C99 could have been done any differently to
> make such code shorter, or unnecessary?

Again, I have said nothing of the kind. I know that if /I/ had been
designing C99 (or any other part of C) for my own personal use, I'd have
done many things differently. Is that what you'd like to hear?

Just like the original C standards, C99 was somewhat of a compromise,
with an emphasis on supporting existing code (written to C90 or K&R
standards, or using extensions from existing compilers), taking into
account existing compilers and their extensions and uses, and also
considering C++ usage when it fitted with C. Ease of implementation in
compilers and libraries was very low down the list of priorities.

Of course the priorities and trade-offs could certainly have been made
differently, and you'd have different results. Who knows if that would
have been a good idea or a bad idea? Certainly the number of lines and
type handling in the headers of one particular C library is no way to judge.

I get exactly the same feeling.

People will defend a bad C feature to the death, no matter what.
Everything is apparently solved by 'understanding'.

Understanding why that big pile of ugly conditional code exists
/doesn't/ make it all right.

But all anyone here cares about is whether something is right or wrong
according to some section, subsection and paragraph in the C standard.

Unless the subject shifts to tools such as compilers. Then it's a little
bit different:

Whatever gcc does is right. Every other way of doing it is wrong.

If you want to program in C, understanding the language is vital. If
you want to use a compiler, understanding how to use it is vital.

Your posts are a mix of misunderstandings and hatred - most of it
blaming the wrong thing. No one here particularly cares about your
personal opinions, and certainly no one can change them, but we do try
to help clear up your misunderstandings.

It is rare for others to express personal opinions directly here - only
occasionally do you see people writing "I'd prefer it if C were defined
like this...". We are mostly much more concerned about how C is
specified, and how it can be used. Similarly, people want to know how
compilers can be used - that is much more important that /why/ they work
in a particular way. Sometimes, however, it is also interesting to look
at the historical prospective to see why particular decisions were made
in the design of C (or compilers).

But do not mistake an understanding of the language and tools for an
unbridled fanboy love of all aspects of C. Most of us have things we
dislike about the language and common tools - though most of us enjoy
using C, or we'd probably not be in this group.

Yes. I'm a great fan. I woke up at about 4.00 last night and spent the
whole early morning chasing memory leaks. (I finally managed to
get valgrind working on a virtual Linux machine). Half of them were
due to failure to free a string holding a file extension, usually only of
five bytes (I included the dot, and the null, and three for the extension
itself). I did think, why didnt I just use C++ and an std::string. Or even
just knock up some Python scripts.

But the thing is, the C code will likely last practically forever. The C++
code won't. The CMake script I wrote a few days ago has already been
deprecated, by the way. It contains a minimum version, and the CMake
people plan to break compatibility with that version. So it's a good job
the program can be compiled with a single simple commandline call to gcc.

If you had used Python of C++ strings, you might not have arbitrarily
and inappropriately restricted yourself to three character file extensions.

Do learn to read. The allocations were of five bytes, because of course
the files had tiny extensions. So usually only five bytes. But of course the
filename comes from the user, and he could pass a massive one as a joke,
or because some automatic process for generating filenames has got out
of control. So the extension is extracted and held in dynamic memory.

Ys, C++ or Python would be far more convenient here, I was making that
point.
