C does allow assignment for structs:

    struct s {
        int x;
        double y;
    };
    struct s obj;
    obj = (struct s){.x = 42, .y = 1.5};

Array assignment doesn't exist, but there's always memcpy():

    int a[3];
    memcpy(a, (int[3]){10, 20, 30}, sizeof a);

what he sees as a serious lack.  Clearly this lack would not have
been addressed in the original C standard, but it could have been
addressed in the 1999 revision, and his article was written 10
years after that.  (I think you point out something similar in a
followup.)  His description of the problem may be more hyperbolic
than it should, but I tend to agree with his judgment of the
magnitude of the consequences.

About the rest of it, his suggestion for a fix clearly is not a
serious proposal - there are too many missing details, for one
thing - but more like a sketch of a starting point.  (This is
after all only a short Dr Dobbs article.)  That sketch has more
rough edges than smooth ones (eg, awful syntax), but it has the
kernel of an idea that IMO would be a valuable addition to C.
I hope people will give the article a serious read rather than
just reacting to the above-quoted one-sentence summary.

You're clueless! It was Paul F. Riddle who was publicly asking how better to obscure his flooding. I just use a filter and won't be bothered by the flooding. Paul F. Riddle's crap has made a total mess of cola via GG, so I don't even try replying to other threads with my phone anymore. One nice thing he has succeeded at with this nonsense is that the Paul F. Riddle ban will forever stay. Paul F. Riddle is commonly seen declaring "THERE IS NO" when it comes to information on a site where info is there multiple times... but Paul F. These posts are clearly not automated, they are made by Paul F. He actually implemented his proposition and it was so nice that he 
proposed a whole new C(++) derived language out of it: D. Check it out,

So what is Jasen Betts's poison for the flooding nonsense? SC? That is the only tool he knows, isn't it? He must be abusing it to write these idiotic "flooding" posts. My conjecture, Jasen Betts took Jeff Torrey's code that he reverse engineered and try to sell online... he's feeding it Jeff Torrey's posts, grabbing "special" paragraphs, then mangling those using the MaxCliqueDyn Maximum Clique algorithm and then he hand posts them because his obsessiveness enables him to do that close to endlessly. Proof Jasen Betts accuses everyone of being Snit http://sandman.net/files/snit_circus.png. Jasen Betts and the other trolls insist searching for a recommendation for a FOSS application is trolling. Sandman makes things up.  Here is a list of names Jonas Eklundh has admitted he attributes to Jasen Betts "Cactus Pete", "Donald", "Donald Miller", "Horace McSwain", "Hymen", "meat", "Mike Weaver", "Modena IV Drid", "Omar Murad Asfour", "Rhino Plastee", "Soapy", "SopwithCamel", "Sunny Day", "Takuya Saitoh", "The Letter Q", "tmelmosfire", "zevon". Perhaps you use it wrong. Do you not comprehend the use of proxies? 

What Jeff Torrey does is certainly more productive.

"Now" would imply that this was something new, rather than a ten year
old article.

Everyone is entitled to their qualified opinion.  When someone as
qualified as Walter Bright gives his opinion in a respected publication,
you can assume he has thought it through and has justifications for that
opinion.  But it is still just an opinion.

I don't think anyone has insulted you or berated you for disliking the
way array parameters decay into pointers in C.  I suspect that most C
programmers have had occasion to wish for a "real" array type in C that
could be passed by value, copied with an assignment, compared by value,
etc., even if they are usually happy with the way C arrays work.

What you get berated for is not your opinion here, but the effort you
make in confusing yourself, confusing others, and your stubborn wilful
ignorance about the subject no matter how often others try to help you.
 You can dislike C's handling of arrays as much as you want, but you
should still understand it and know how it works.

if you use a discussion group you could 'bump up' (not sure if its good word) something wiser or something stupider 

in case of hodgin it is worse than stupider, this is obvious imbecilic pathology and you constantly bump it up 

(you also like to produce a big amounts of post just to disagree with someone who just disagrees with you and "make foam " this is also sad and unfortunate imo (thoug feeding insane hodgin is worse)

(in general imo everyone who bumps up an abuser of hodgin type (long time and imbecilic with big devastating inopact on intelectual quality of the group) in some way may be called as a troll

the argumentation that hodgin is like normal user in some threads only an abuser in another canot realy be taken imo..

as to conflating pointers with arrays 
this is ok in c (as far as i understand
word conflating - still my engish is not much complete... its ok..it is good

what is possibly not ok is syntax of int*  and alike (atill not sure it is ok/standable but probably no - probably its wrong 

(im to tired hobvever to write tody probably why)




as to biggest mistake the syntax of

void foo(something1* in, something2* out) 

i mean lack a nice/normal syntax of returning ny left side and lack of default passing by implicit pointer not only arrays but everything what is big 

a,b,c = foo(d,e,f) //where a b c d e f may be structures and will be passed all by implicit pointers

- this mistake is probably the biggest

as to int*

one thing to consider is if all thet cases 
when you use pointers to do local work in routine you really couldnt do it using 
variables and its adressing (i mean like a[i] instend of using pointers) and if that would not be better

the advantage is you dont need to write pointers and you dont need to instantiate pointers (for example like local variables)

howewer this is the question

yet other thing is if one could avoid pointers maybe even in code which stores them in memory using offsets could not be better (as offsets are not so machine dependant) you could save and load such tree to disk for example

this is also a question

pointers gave some lov level feel of power 
and this is good but im not saying to get rid of it but maybe consider some alternatives and see whats goin on

other thing is syntax, i maybe dont find 
this syntax int*a  to mauch fortunate 
int* part is yet not so bad but *a part is maybe more doubtfull (i was writnig something on tis maybe though i not quite remember that my conclusions if there were some)

For using D now for a certain time slices (i.e. arrays in D), I can say 
that I really would like to see it added to C sometime. It is really a 
nice, very nice feature. So much easier than carrying a len parameter by 
hand. Of course in C it wouldn't use the niceties the GC allows but 
alone the slicing and the passing as parameters would really be a big 
progress in C.

It shouldn't even require any major structural change to the language.
Simply specify that if a struct type which contains a T* and a size_t
or size_t[1] has a certain attribute, a T[] may be implicitly converted
to that type; if a struct with a T* and a size_t[N] has that attribute,
an n-dimensional T[][]... may be implicitly converted to that type.

Code which would want to use the new syntax, but which needs to be
compatible with C99, could use macros to fudge compatibility, e.g.

    #define wrapFooArray(x)\
      ((fooArrayWrapper){(x), sizeof *(x)/sizeof foo})
    #define act_on_array(x, y) do_act_on_array(wrapFooArray(x), y)

Such code wouldn't have the type-checking that could be provided with
a genuine compiler-supported feature [passing a foo* rather than a foo[]
would silently yield wrong results, for example], but code which used the
new feature could benefit from type checking on compilers that support it,
while still being compatible with those that don't.
