What part of 'and setting the top element' do you not understand ?

But I will make it easy for you: top() returns an lvalue, which can
be used to both read and set the top element.

Do you know what "begging the question" means ?

Here's an example for you:

The point of pop() is to give you the top element of the stack.
So there's no point in having a separate top() operation.
