James Kuyper already pointed out that standard C has no such feature.
Type long double, which is standard, *could* be 128 bits, and it is in
some implementations, but it's not required to be. (gcc supports
__float128 as an extension on some target systems.)

I don't believe that's correct. SPARC/Solaris 2.9 has 128-bit long
double, with 113 mantissa bits and a 15-bit exponent. I don't know
whether that format is supported in hardware, but it seems likely that
it is.

I'm not aware of any general trend away from floating-point.
Other schemes are certainly possible, and are supported in some
software packages, but fixed-format floating-point still has a
tremendous speed advantage, which is vital for a lot of applications.
