But clear as day to *whom*?

A person who has never written or even seen the source for a computer 
program?

A novice programmer, familiar only with, say, BASIC?

An expert programmer, who has been working exclusively in assembler code 
for the last decade?

A skilled programmer who knows the relevant language well enough to 
actually be doing maintenance programming and debugging with it?

Writing code for any but the latter is simply a waste of effort, and the 
latter will understand idiomatic usage patterns, or be able to figure 
them out with minimal effort.

The notion of using C to produce something akin to a cross between COBOL 
and BASIC is silly at best: if you want that sort of language, they 
already exist.
