Having more than one '.' in a file name might be a problem for some
(old) systems.

AOUT.EXE would have worked, but A.EXE arguably follows the convention
that the base part of the file name is short for "assembler", with only
the extension being changed because DOS and Windows require it; it could
also be confused with the French word for August.
The choice was arbitrary, and I'm not too bothered about the specifics.
