I'm still using Office 2000, because I found no features in the newer versions to justify an upgrade. BTW, I have 5 desktops and 1 laptop: 2 are still running Windows 2000, 1 Windows XP, 1 Vista, 2 Windows 7. I do *not* intend to upgrade any to Windows 8. Helmut.

I remember posting loads of stuff on the newsgroup years ago complaining about Micro$oft's obvious wish to move into the "rented operating system" and "rented software" business. I remember specifically suggesting that they would move like wildfire into the "pay per document" business if they ever got the micro payments system properly off the ground. Well, "the Cloud" is clearly where they want us to go today and its lucrative "targeted advertising" revenue is the nearest thing to "pay per document" that they've managed to got (so far!). Mike

We are facing many problems because MS is looking for a way to survive. To do that, they make new OS versions that carry a lot of problems, all because they are focused in selling something new. It could be much better if they were focused in fixing what they have already done, and making improvements and enhancements to what it's already working. But, how can they get paid? A two years subscription period wouldn't be too bad idea after all.

| We are facing many problems because MS is looking for a way to survive. ??!! Microsoft continues to make gobs of money they don't deserve. Windows, MS Office are overpriced monopoly products that provide nearly all of the profit, with a bit coming from X-Box. The rest of their efforts are money-losing experiments, with billions that they can afford to waste. MS has never profited from their online ventures. | It could be much better if they were focused in fixing what they have | already done That won't happen, no matter what the venue. Microsoft is focused on prying your money out of your wallet. Period.

I'm not talking about a suscription to something online. I'm talking about a suscription to updates, patchs, new features, service, etc, to ensure that your OS is all right. I mean: not to sell the OS, just rent it. > | It could be much better if they were focused in fixing what they have > | already done > > That won't happen, no matter what the venue. Microsoft > is focused on prying your money out of your wallet. Period. Yes, that's why I'm talking that _perhaps_ a subscription scheme would had been less harmful. So they wouldn't need to reinvent the wheel every two years to sell new licenses, and just focus on what the people really need.

Actually, that's a damned insightful way to look at it. A subscription model /could/ shift their focus away from breaking stuff, towards making damned sure it never broke. Hmmmm... I didn't analyze it too much, it was just an idea because having everything new every few years and making old things not compatible is a real problem. I think Gates saw the writing on the wall and decided to ditch a sinking ship before he went down with it. Wise move. He clearly has no intention of ever going back . . . unless of course something happens in the future which looks likely to send the stocks soaring again, at which point Gates might change his mind so that he can go back just as the turnaround is beginning and then pretend he did it all himself. May be, or may be that he saw he had enough money for several generations already and He didn't need to work any more, and as a personal achievement he already reached the goal of putting his Windows in almost every PC in the world, so He decided to do something else.

He was already in that position many, many years before he retired . . . but he didn't go then. Like I said, I think he simply left a sinking ship before he and his own personal reputation went down with it. Mike

Hang on a second there, Eduardo. You are talking about Bill Gates and I notice that you have used the pronoun "he" with an upper case "H" at least twice, a mark of respect which is usually reserved for dieties. I know that you believe in God of course, but I wonder if there is something you are not telling us ;-) Mike

I didn't do that on purpose anyway.
