I added barcodes to one of my VB6 apps.
Just had to print the order number using a barcode font. There are
several free TrueType fonts available.
We used cheap hand-held scanners for barcode reading.
I first created a small test program for printing order numbers with
the different barcode fonts in various font sizes.
Then I tried to read the printed numbers using the scanner to find the
optimal font and size for our purpose.

Some of the free fonts caused too many reading errors in every font size.

Others worked quite fine with our combination of Laserjet printer and
hand-held scanner.
We finally used one with excellent readability in medium-large size.
(This font however caused scan errors in small to medium font sizes and
in large to XL sizes.)

For apps where you have control over the used hardware you usually don't
need professional fonts, free TrueType fonts will do. But test with
different font sizes with your hardware first.

BTW, I tested one professional font too: it had a wider range of usable
font sizes, but the finally used free font had far less reading errors
in our preferred size.
