This trigger springs a magic trap when it detects any sound. A sound trigger functions like an ear and has a +15 bonus on Listen checks. A successful Move Silently check, magical silence, and other effects that would negate hearing defeat it. A trap with a sound trigger requires the casting of clairaudience during its construction.


These traps produce the effects of any spells included in their construction, as described in the appropriate entries. If the spell in a magic device trap allows a saving throw, its save DC is 10 + spell level  1.5. Some spells make attack rolls instead.

To investigate the macroevolution of venom as a complex trait, we employed comparative transcriptomics to quantify the gene expression of different toxin components and generate the venom expression phenotype among sea anemone species. Using publicly available transcriptomes, we identified single-copy orthologs to reconstruct the relatedness among sea anemones (Fig. 1A and Supplementary Data 1). In concert, we mapped the expression of multiple toxin families to each de novo assembled transcriptome. This included Actinoporin, NEP3 and NEP6, NaTx, and KTx1, 2, 3, and 5. Transcripts per million (TPM) values generated from the mapping were then used to reconstruct the venom expression phenotype for each species (Fig. 1A, pie graphs at tips). By performing ancestral state reconstruction (ASR) of the venom expression phenotype among sea anemones (Fig. 1A), we revealed that the NaTx toxin family was most likely the dominant toxin in the last common ancestors of sea anemones.

Many first aid and snakebite kits contain a suction device for removing venom from a snakebite wound. These devices provide way more suction than your mouth ever could and don't require an incision (which is dangerous and could cause infection). Tip: If your snakebite kit contains instructions for making an incision on the wound, throw it away and buy a more current kit. Also note that the Annals of Emergency Medicine reported in 2004 that these commercially available extractors remove virtually no venom, just blood and other fluids [source: Alberts].
