We love our movies. And boy, do we love popcorn. Popcorn Time is the result of many developers and designers putting a bunch of APIs together to make the experience of watching torrent movies as simple as possible.


But wait, it's not over: general performances have been improved, our subtitle selection has been refined, new languages (Hello Croatians, Thais and Vietnamese, please have some popcorn!) and... get a look to a rather exhaustive changelog at the bottom of the post. :)

Following its creation, Popcorn Time quickly received positive media attention, with some comparing the app to Netflix for its ease of use.[3] After this increase in popularity, the program was abruptly taken down by its original developers on March 14, 2014, due to pressure from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).[4] Since then, the program has been forked several times with several other development teams such as Time4Popcorn and the Butter Project to maintain the program and produce new features. Time4Popcorn reportedly gained millions of users within four months of launching in 2014 and became the first fork to bring Popcorn Time to Android devices.[5] In September 2014, Time4Popcorn became available on jailbroken Apple devices, and eventually non-jailbroken iOS devices via a Windows installation tool.[6] The iOS version of Popcorn Time is no longer maintained.[7]


Popcorn Time was developed "in a couple of weeks" by a group from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who elected "Pochoclín" (derived from pochoclo, which means popcorn in Buenos Aires parlance) as their mascot. They believed that piracy was a "service problem" created by "an industry that portrays innovation as a threat to their antique recipe to collect value", and also argued that streaming providers were being given too many restrictions and forced to provide inconsistent service between countries, noting that streaming providers in their native Argentina "seem to believe that There's Something About Mary [1998] is a recent movie. That movie would be old enough to vote here."[12]


On May 20, 2015, the government of Israel blocked all access to the official downloads of Popcorn Time, following a lawsuit from its biggest cable and satellite providers for copyright infringement. Although the download sites were blocked, internet users still possessing a copy of the installation file and/or the program were not affected, and there were other sharing sites that distributed installation files. Less than a month later, the government reversed the ban.


On August 17, 2015, the Danish website popcorntime.dk was shut down by Danish police and two arrests were made.[19] The case has caused controversy given that the website is not affiliated with the Popcorn Time developer teams but only distributed information about the service.


After its discontinuation, the Popcorn Time application was forked by various different groups to continue development of the project.[27] On August 8, 2015, the website of the original Popcorn Time application was redirected to the popcorntime.io website.[28] A few days later, members of the original Popcorn Time project announced that they would endorse the popcorntime.io project as the successor to the original discontinued Popcorn Time.[29]


After the original developers discontinued the program, other teams forked the original Popcorn Time source code and continued development independently. These groups continued using the name "Popcorn Time", but other than the Popcorn Time project, these forks are not associated with the developers of the original application. The developers of the original Popcorn Time had members join the Popcorn Time project, and endorsed this as the successor to the discontinued old Popcorn Time.[29] Popcorntime.app, formerly popcorntime.sh, is sponsored by private VPN company VPN.ht.[31][32]


This Popcorn Time fork was originally launched with the web domain time4popcorn.eu. The domain time4popcorn.eu was suspended by Eurid, as a result of a legal investigation against time4popcorn.eu. The programs that rely on the time4popcorn.eu domain temporarily stopped functioning, but the program and website were updated to a new domain popcorn-time.se.[33][34] As the original time4Popcorn.eu domain was forcibly removed, the team moved to the popcorn-time.se website.[35]On May 13, 2014, the fork released a mobile version for Android phones and tablets.[36] In addition, popcorn-time.se added built in VPN on June 9, 2014, provided by Kebrum.[37]The popcorn-time.se developers later added Chromecast support for desktop and Android.[38][39] On July 30, 2014, popcorn-time.se developers added support for the Apple TV to their desktop app; on September 30, 2014, an app for jailbroken iOS devices was released.[40][41][42] An anonymous development team created a tool that allows iOS users to download the fork via Windows, thus allowing non-jailbroken devices to install Popcorn Time.[6]






Following the shutdown of popcorntime.io, users of Popcorn Time created a series of fixes that modified the original software and got it working again.[43] The fixes were added to the Popcorn Time installers and named Popcorn Time Community Edition, giving credit to the community of users that resurrected the software.[44]


On November 3, 2015, the popcorntime.io domain was obtained by the MPAA after winning court orders in Canada and New Zealand.[46] This came about after winning an injunction on October 16, 2015, to shut the website down, although the project reappeared on a new website (popcorntime.sh).[47][48][49][50]

How do you install Popcorntime Beta on Linux? The Beta Version is a tar.xz file that is downloaded that does not auto install when clicked on like the Windows and Mac versions do. Installing programs in Linux is Not easy for the average non advanced user if it is not a self installing file or is not available via the Ubuntu Software Center.


What's going on behind the scenes, however, is a lot more complex, not to mention illegal in much of the world. To get all of those movies, Popcorn Time reaches out to groups of people sharing films and TV shows over torrent networks. It then begins to download the video you want to stream and at the same time shares that video with other people. This means when you click play, you're both downloading pirated content and sharing it with others.


Torrents have been around for a long time and have historically been associated with piracy. They've never been particularly easy to get started with, though, so they never made it as big as, say, Napster. Popcorn Time, on the other hand, is a lot more straightforward. It hides everything that's difficult about torrents behind a stylish, easy-to-use interface. This isn't just helpful in a practical sense; it also gives the app a feeling of legitimacy, encouraging users who might otherwise be put off by torrenting sites. These reasons are why it's been gaining so much attention and why copyright holders are so unhappy about it.


Before you go, please download Popcorn Time Windows or macOS version on Popcorn Time official website Popcorn Time sh or popcorntime.app. Be aware of Popcorn Time fraud - version 6.2 on getpopcorntime.is. The wrong version is unsupported here. Please update your Popcorn Time to the latest version 0.4.4 if Corona version 0.4 is a bugbear on your desktop and then read the below workarounds to solve "Popcorn Time won't let you full screen" or "Popcorn Time bar not hiding on full screen" troubles.


Note: currently, Popcorn Time has been shut down several weeks due to legal issue. You can't find popcorntime.app or popcorn time sh any more on Google. Though the official Github repo is still online and gets updated, it's reported that the Github repo would also be offline if the movie studios win their case. Rumors say that Popcorn Time plans to make a comeback. If and when this will happen still remains unclear. If you worry about legal issue caused by Popcorn Time app, you'd better stop using it right now and resort to legal app for movie watching.


This is not the best option to fix Popcorn Time progress bar and mouse pointer constantly appearing issue on Windows 10, for it costs you a couple of minutes to wait for operating system degradation, let alone times for apps re-installation on new Windows 8 OS. Certainly, you can still take this method into consideration if you don't concern yourself with time and energy.


But there is no official site anymore. The official site was shut down. The only thing left is the clones. Thankfully, one project emerged as the preferred client, and their code can be inspected and verified.


Okay---so you've downloaded the new official open-source client. So that's safe to use, right? Not so fast. Remember, this is all still based on torrents. Your ISP can see exactly what you're doing, and if a torrent monitoring company sees your IP in the swarm, it'll get your info from your ISP and potentially lead to a lawsuit.


Your IP address is cross-checked against a known list of ISPs. Your ISP is contacted, and they may be forced to pass on the details of the customer associated with an IP at a specific date and time, or asked to take action themselves. Fines, and possible disconnection await repeat infringers.


Then launch the program, pick a movie you want to watch, click the little up arrow with a popcorn icon at the bottom of the window next to Watch Now button. If you have a live, ready to stream Chromecast ready, you will see it on the list. On the screenshot below, you can see one called Den that is ready to use there.
