If you have a binary that uses x11 as its default terminal (the compiled-in default), it recognises if it is started in an environment without an x11 server (text mode console or so) and starts with terminal "unknown". That's different from the other interactive terminals, which only give an error when you try to actually plot on them. Hth. Karl
