The fig terminal output certainly works in general, so more information 
would be needed in order to diagnose what went wrong in your case.

Please file a bug report on the project bug tracker:
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=browse&group_id=2055&atid=102055&status=1

In order for it to be useful, you should provide
1) the commands used to create your *.fig output file
2) a copy of the *.fig output file that was produced
3) version information for gnuplot (yes, I know you said it but please attach
  it to the bug report also)
