OK, I see the error and can reproduce it in 4.4.3.
I don't know exactly what causes it, but the good news is that whatever
the cause is, the bad behaviour is not present in the current CVS source
for either version 4.4 or 4.5.   That means version 4.4.4, to be 
released probably next week, will not have this problem.

FWIW I am guessing that the change listed here fixed the problem,
although it's not immediately clear why it would be relevant:

2011-06-17
      * src/getcolor.c (quantize_gray)): Remove a possible discontinuity
      at the boundary of defined palettes with a small number of segments.
      Bug #3317746
