I would like to set a label which in LaTeX I would write as
$N_{\theta} = 20$
which will first of all give me italic script for the symbol,
but upright for the "20". And it will give me N subscript \theta.
If the italic bit is awkward, all upright would be second best.

Can I do this in gnuplot? How?
