Depending on what exactly you mean by that R**2, it's very well possible 
that it doesn't appear anywhere in the process, or output, of gnuplot's 
"fit" command, because that operates in an entirely different way than 
the one you're used to getting that value from.

The off-diagonal element in the matrix _is_ a coefficient of 
correlation.  Whether or not it's the one you're looking for depends on 
which of several meaning of that terms you're looking for.
