Hi,
My gnuplot version is-

	G N U P L O T
	Version 4.6 patchlevel 2    last modified 2013-03-14
	Build System: Linux x86_64

I am using the following script-
""
# set terminal pdf
# set output "myplot.pdf"
# set encoding utf8
# set term pdfcairo
set contour
set view map
unset surface
set xlabel '{/Symbol a}'
set cntrparam levels discrete 2.3,6.2,11.8
splot [0:360][0:0.9] "test1.dat" with lines
""

it is simply printing- {/Symbol a}
