Well, somebody has obviously wanted that "idiotware" enough to actually 
implement it:

There are even RPM packages in the sourceforge.jp download area, the 
installation is very easy.


And I am not sure about the idiotware. Are you calling people who have 
purchased EnterpriseDB idiots? Or are you calling idiots the developers 
who work for EnterpriseDB and who have implemented hints? Are you 
referring to Bruce Momjian? I disagree with Bruce about many things, but 
I wouldn't just call him an idiot, despite the fact that he works for the 
company that has put hints in their DB product.

Of course, PostgreSQL has many other shortcomings, like bad partitioning 
and the lack of any internal parallelism, so EnterpriseDB is not very 
successful, but hints are actually one of the more useful things done by 
EnterpriseDB.
