SQL 2008 R2 brought lots of new features in the BI area, for instance 
PowerPivot (which appears to be some improved Excel thingie), but there
were few changes in the Engine area. The most noticeable is that in R2
you get backup compression in Standard Edition. (In R1 it's only in 
Enterprise.) They did however add Unicode compression and that was enough
to bump the version number of the database format.
