If the iMac is logging out, then it would usually be a Preference setting
- mine's an old version of Mac OS X, so I'm not sure where it is (Screen
Saver, Security, Users, or Energy Saver options). That should stop it
logging out in the first place.

Unless it's a faulty Mac OS X Preference setting that's causing the
problem. You could try creating a new User account (with the appropriate
permissions to access the database or a copy of it) and se if that solves
the problem. Or you could remove the appropriate plist file from the
current user's account and re-set the Mac OS X Preference options.

It could simply be the user logging out manually. Or it could even be
software / hardware problems or powercuts that are crashing the system.

There's no real reason why the iMac can't be left running and logged in,
unless of course it's been done on purpose for security reasons.

Database files that have been "recovered" shouldn't really be used for
anything except extracting the data to be imported into fresh / clean
backup copies of the files.
