I'm still finding my way around FileMaker 12 and am confused about
some of the features. Right now the thing that's got me puzzled is
how to customize field appearance. If I choose a layout theme – say,
Wave Touch – it applies custom formatting to all layout objects,
including fields.

One of the effects it applies is to put a snazzy blue gradient border
around a field when it's in focus. If I look through the Inspector
for some way to control this border – say, if I want to apply the
effect to some fields and not others, or if I want a different color
or gradient – there doesn't appear to be any way to do it. I've
rummaged through all the drop menus and options and searched online
and I haven't found anything that explains how to control this effect.

Another thing the theme does is apply a strange spacing around the
text in the field so that a field which used to require only 18 pixels
in height now requires 28 or the text gets cropped. This too seems to
be independent of any controls that I can apply myself, including the
standard controls like line spacing, alignment and indents.

Anybody have any idea about this stuff? Is there a good, detailed
guide to managing these controls online? FM's materials are pretty
slim and they gloss over most of the new features without providing
much specificity. Any help would be appreciated.

Best,

Wave Touch changes font to Arial and font size to 18, add the border, add
some space below the line, and there you have required height. From the
normal menu look also at Format > Linespacing. This is set at 16 points. You
have to change the fontsize back manually if you want smaller fields.
As to the line around the box. It is defined in the inspector. Select field,
choose tab 'appearance' from inspector, first drop-down (it says 'Normal
State'), drop down to 'in focus', watch the border change. Now look at the
inspector, where it says 'line' this seems like Solid, 1, black. But next to
the black you see a little arrow. Click it and you see that actually 'other
color' is defined as RGB 4,9,33. And indeed it seems to have some actions
not included in the inspector, or any menu. To totally comprehend its
actions you'll have to delve into the stylesheets found in the themes
folder.

i don't think they are properly described.
