Just got on to them earlier and went through the rigamarole again He agreed it was slow but working he tested and looked in modem and said it was ok. so knowing what would happen I said how about I do factory reset and you can wait for it to reboot then test again. so he came back in 5 or so minutes and it had not connected (it connected about 3or 4 hours later) He is going to send new modem and maybe tech Could VPN have set something strange in modem preventing my login (proxies etc)which should not be a problem, and anyway should be reset on factory reboot.

Looks more likely the logon problem is just that you should be using just 192.168.1.1 not the full form you said you are using https://192.168.1.1/ If you can now logon using just 192.168.1.1, post the modem stats page.

If I put it into the address bar it logs on but not if I enter it into the browser question slot which is what felix suggested if "just type 192.168.1.1 into the browser" means that. Anyway it is all academic now that I have fixed the problem. It was not going to work however I did it with the compromised line.
