(or she) can figure out why you have your obsession with me. I can
almost guarantee that anytime I see your name in a ng you'll be taking

Aww Rod, I never knew that you read every post of mine, that's sweet.

And a decent 5.1 will sound better than a cheap stereo, what's your point?

Ultra low level bass has little to do with most HT systems
unfortunately. Some stereo speakers have good 15" woofers, while some HT
systems have "sub woofers" using cheap 6" or 8" speakers, which MAY put
out 20Hz at below the level of audibility, or just laugh in your face
before blowing up! :-)

yep, and some have very good 8" or 10" speakers. a sub is definitely the
way to go with any HT system, simply because a speaker designed to
handle just a specific frequency range is going to do a better job at it
than a speaker designed to handle multiple frequencies. it's why there
are tweeters for example.

Yep, laws of physics apply. A 15" speaker is too big for treble, and a
6" or 8" speaker is too small for real bass. Just because some
manufacturers call something a "sub woofer" doesn't mean it is any
better, or anywhere near as good as another manufacturers "woofer"!
It's the result that matters, not the marketing BS.

Trevor.

as a bass speaker generally speaking, but not as a sub speaker, if it's
designed to handle those low frequencies. you don't need a 12" speaker
in a sub because low bass frequency depends on the length of cone
excursion much more than speaker size, and the cones ability to execute
it without vibration causing spurious frequencies, which depends on cone
stiffness and the intensity of the magnetic field affecting the voice
coil, which depends on magnet size, coil windings, etc., . plus sub
enclosures are designed to resonate to reinforce the low frequencies the
driver produces.

Dead right, all of which applies equally to any woofer whether it is
called a "sub woofer" or not. But there is a limit to linear excursion
in a small speaker, resulting in greater distortion or lower max SPL.
Usually both.

Ah yes, one note bass. Wonderful! But if you simply mean ported
speakers, most larger stand alone speakers are ported also.

true. lower frequencies depend on the volume of air moved and that's
achieved in a smaller speaker by greater cone extension, but with the
limitations you mention, or by a larger speaker with less cone movement.
however, in many (most?)  domestic environments a sub is more
aesthetically suitable than large speakers and easier to accommodate.

lol! but in a good sub the enclosure is designed not to produce any peak
resonance frequency

Yep, always a trade off between performance, size, and cost.

Replace "sub" with speaker, and you are correct.

Don't forget that you are talking to a bloke whom has been sucked in by
the Monster marketing BS so comprehensively that he's actually seeing
things that are technically impossible.
