Is this problem with a fresh install or did it start after a Windows
update?

It might be worth updating your BIOS to the latest version available.

I suspect after an update, since it just started recently. I was always
able to sleep the computer up until then. i'm kinda hoping that M$ will
fix it with a future update

yes, I saw one thread that said to do that. I will have to find out how
to do it.

Strange. Just to check: when you say "restarts" you do mean reboots
completely, not that it just comes straight back out of sleep mode?

I suggest you stop looking with Google and go straight to your Motherboard
manufacturer's website for that.

it just comes back on out of sleep mode about one second after going to
sleep. just as if I had pressed a key to wake it up

Gah, that's quite different then. Have you changed your keyboard or mouse,
or how they're plugged in?

Your BIOS should have settings to control what causes it to "wake up". Try
disabling them to isolate what's triggering the computer to wake up again.

no, nothing is changed. it's a common issue

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=computer+wakes+up+right+after+sleep&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=CBXzWbG9CYbr8wfw1YiwDg

I haven't bothered trying to resolve the issue yet tho, as I've busy
with other stuff

I thought I had all my bios settings not to wake the PC, but I'll check them

checked them. there is nothing set to wake the PC.

I swapped out the drive in this computer with another with win 7
installed for this pc, and it happily sleeps. so it's definitely an OS
issue, most likely one of M$ updates. one thing we can be sure of in
life is that M$ will never cease to find ways to screw up our computers!

Are you sure it actually goes into sleep mode before it "wakes up"? Does
the power light change colour, flash etc. as it normally does to indicate
it's in sleep mode before it automatically starts again?

There's a facility for the BIOS to trigger the PC to wake up at a time
set by the OS, maybe Windows has started setting this to a silly or
invalid value for some reason.

yes, it does- for about three seconds then restarts

yeah, lets hope they fix it asap. wonder how many other ppl are having
this problem? also, might it depend on the kind of computer setup or
motherboard?

Certainly, there will be different software routines to talk to
different BIOS types. I'd still want to try that BIOS update if it
were me.

haven't done so because the Asus site lists 18 variants of my
motherboard P8H61-M, so I'm not sure which to use, viz

https://www.asus.com/search/results.aspx?SearchKey=p8h61-m&SearchType=Support%20only%20Product&Category=SupportOnly_Motherboard&IsSupport=False&Page=1

can you offer a suggestion?

also.. I took the bios out of 'performance' mode and put it in 'normal
mode', and the computer slept, so I thought I had a (temporary)
solution. but then the next time I tried (still in normal mode) the
computer woke by itself, so still no resolution

it's ok. I found it via another link:

Seems like it. You might want to have a play with the "powercfg"
command at the command prompt:
https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc748940(v=WS.10).aspx

This looks interesting:
"-lastwake
Reports information about the event that woke the computer from
 the last sleep transition."

Eureka! thanks mate. you're a genius! :) '-last wake' didn't help, but
using '-device query wake_from_any', which listed 55 devices (lol), I
eventually found the culprit. i'd had my suspicions about usb triggering
the wake, and the offender was a superfluous cordless mouse receiver I'd
inadvertently left connected. the computer will now snooze happily. many
thanks for your help! :)

Well done, we got there in the end.

Jeeze you posted this link way back

https://www.google.com.au/search?q=computer+wakes+up+right+after+sleep&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b-ab&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=CBXzWbG9CYbr8wfw1YiwDg

Using powercfg was the first suggestion in it. Didn't you look at your
own link?

Corse it does. It it didn’t, it wouldn’t have got out like that, fuckwit.

Everything you need will be on the manufacturer of your motherboard's
website, just make sure you follow the instructions carefully.

I had the same issue with Win7 and my Gigabyte motherboard and it fixed it.
