#61624 — Google login protection is getting ridiculous

FromNiska Hubot <nospam@bitbucket.net>

SubjectGoogle login protection is getting ridiculous

I run a business from home. There are several computers and 2 internet
connections. Now almost every time I log into gmail, google scholar,
google code et cetera, it thinks I am an impostor. For example if I go
from a linux PC to Windows, that is enough difference for those f-wits.
So I have to get recovery code sent to my phone. But this arvo my phone
battery was zilch, so I select alternative option, to wit "what date did
you create this account?" Who the fuck can remember that?

Some of us have enough of a clue that we can check that trivially using the
emails.

Bit hard without access to them.

Only if you are actually stupid enough to have nothing but webmail.

Use your scone, Woddy. If you're going to keep local copies of your
webmail, you might as well go the whole hog and use genuine email.

I do, fuckwit. And hordes get real radical and use their phone or tablet
too.

So your comments were irrelevant.

What a surprise *that* isn't.

wouldn't google still block access when logging in from an email client
on a computer when changing from one computer to another? and the
disadvantage would be if he replied on one pc then there'd be no copy of
the email on any of the others, whereas using webmail all emails and
replies are together and can be seen on all computers.

I opened a gmail account years ago, then never used it. Too fucking
cumbersome.

So I'm not sure about this, but I think that you don't use an email
client when you use gmail: it is itself a sorta email client.

> and the disadvantage would be if he replied on one pc then there'd
> be no copy of the email on any of the others,

Set your LAN up properly and you have no problem. There are two
solutions:
1 have your email client running on just one machine, and run
   it remotely when you're using a different machine;
2 keep all your emails on one machine and run whatever email
client(s) you wish to on whichever machine(s) you wish to,
   accessing the emails via nfs.
Setting up for the second is a tad laborious, but much more
flexible. And nfs gives you heaps more than just email access.

Sure. If you can log on.

yes, you just use a browser, but you can also use an email client (like
Thunderbird) to get your gmail mail on your computer (as I do)

but that's probably beyond the technical knowledge and skill of the
average user

I don't even know whether I still *have* that account.

Don't care, either.

Oho. Well, we learn something every day.

The average winblows user, perhaps. But if you're using multiple
computers you should really be looking at going beyond that.

In *n*x systems, a few mount points in /mnt and a few entries in
/etc/exports, /etc/fstab amd /etc/hosts and your LAN is partway
to being a supercomputer: you don't have to worry about where
stuff is, because it's available no matter which machine you're
using.

Nothing whatever to do with the LAN setup.

Havent need to do it like that for a fucking long time now.

Stupid way to do things.

The real way do to it is to setup the email clients properly and have
it all work fine whichever one you choose to use at a particular time.

And its completely trivial to ensure that you always can.

Don't rely on google.

It's also quite poor security in itself, people you know might
be able to make a good guess at that information depending on
circumstances. They might just need to look back into their
archives for that "hi, this is my new address since the last
one died" email from a few years ago.

I'm with you.

I couldn't care less about gmail or any google accounts in general,
but several times now I've wanted to download an app on my phone and
of course you need to do it through google play (or whatever it is).
Oh... I need to fucking login? Of course, I (usually) have no idea
what my login is because I don't use google for anything else.

Either I eventually figure it out and login or create yet another
account... next thing, I'm locked out of it because I've accessed the
account from more than one device. FFS.

It's SO fucking annoying when all you really want to do is download a
goddamned app.

Some Android APP's won't load without GooglePay
A lot will load from your PC to your device

I am trying to make friends outside. of Facebook
while applying the same pnciples.
Therefore, every day I walk down the street
and tell passers-by what I have eat how I feel at the moment, what I have done the night before, what I will do later and with whom.
I give them pictures of my family, my dog and of me gardening,
taking things apart in the garage, watering the lawn, standing
in front of landmarks, driving around town, having lunch and doing
what anybody and everybody does every day.
I also listen to their conversations, give them the "thumbs up"
and tell them I like them.
And it works just like Facebook!
I already have four people following me: two police officers, a private investigator and a psychiatrist.

Yes, you are both terminal fuckwits.

Odd that I do that every fucking day and don't get locked out.

That's what google says about fuckwits like you two.

Works fine for me.

And yet a-fuckin'-gain my phone gets locked out by Google's retarded
security. 'unknown device' my fucking arse. Must have been when I used
google maps via Expedia this time. Same goddamned phone used as
always, good thing I had my notebook with me to unblock it.

Just fucking ridiculous, no apparent way to disable this shit, either.

Google has us by the balls and they love to squeeze them to remind us
that we're just a commodity.

Welcome to the modern world.

It's extremely annoying.

Another (somewhat) annoying thing is an app called Line.
It's basically a way to make free calls or messages and extremely
popular in SEA. And it's very good at it too, BUT you're only allowed
to use your account on ONE device. For the life of me I cannot
understand why... I set it up on my old phone so I can use it around
the yard at home without wrecking my new phone - but NOPE can't do
that. I tried to use it on my main phone and it deleted itself because
I set it up on my old phone...
