There is no way that a stupidly expensive system like that will pay for itself in 2.5 years with no FIT Or even with FIT either.

Why are Pretzel and Rod talking about gas powered generators? Is it for a SHTF situation? And if it is, what are they planning to run and for how long? We used to just use a big truck battery to run our fridge and lights in our other farm if we were only there for a few days. If there for longer we took a single solar panel. We had hot water for showers from our fuel stove with a wet back and were very comfortable with that very simple set up.

Don’t plan to tho, my place is passive solar and I don’t heat it at all in the winter, use an electric throw which is like an electric blanket that you use on the chair in the evening etc. Gas prices have gone mad and have always had the major downside of the fixed cost during the non winter tho gas cylinders instead of piped gas does fix that. > And if it is, what are they planning to run and for how long? I'm not. I do have a petrol powered generator that I got for peanuts but don’t get enough power failures to matter currently so have never actually needed to use it myself. It does work fine and only cost me $20 at a garage sale so is available if we do start seeing blackouts in the peak of summer. Dunno if it will start the evap cooler, probably not. > We used to just use a big truck battery to run our fridge and lights in > our other farm if we were only there for a few days. I'd be fine for hot water for showers in summer if we do see blackouts and don’t really even need hot water for showers in summer with blackouts anyway. The evap cooler would be more of a problem, we do sometimes see 10 days over 40C and that’s a tad warm. Not hard to get a bigger generator that would start the cooler tho, although we do see a lot of summer blackouts in the next year or so, they will obviously not be cheap used then. Likely easy enough to find one that appears to not be working and get it going cheaply tho if it comes to the crunch.
